Heavenly Father, Lord of life, author of hope, victor over death, be present with us in difficult moments of grief and bereavement. Grant, oh Lord, the real experience of your living presence. You are Jehovah Shammah, the Lord who is present in the lives of your people. You are the God of comfort who comforts us in our trials so that we will in turn comfort others anguished by grief, despair, and death. We are assured in your Word that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).
In your infinite and unconditional love, be pleased to look in on the grieving and bereaved and enable them to hear your holy Word, that through your ministering angels, and the comfort of the Scriptures, they may again find hope. Impart to our minds an understanding of life after death, to our hearts an assurance of that which we are invited to possess in Jesus Christ, and to our lives the courage to persevere in faithful living. Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, if a man keeps my word, he will never see death (John 8:51). By the power of Jesus Christ, who himself rose from the grave, comfort, and challenge all who have lost loved ones with the words of eternal life. For we who walk by faith in Jesus Christ trust that when are days are done here on earth, we, too, like our foreparents who are with you now, will spend eternity with you in heaven. In Jesus name, Amen.
