Jesus Cleanses The Temple

JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE
By: Angela Lee Price

Several key events happened during Jesus' final week.  The cursing of the fig tree and cleansing of the Temple are two that occurred on Monday.  On Monday Jesus continued to fulfill prophecy.  In Matthew 21, Jesus upholds God's justice in the Temple, fulfilling Isaiah 42's vision of the Messiah as a Just Servant.
The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of God's Just Servant declaring, "Look at my servant, whom I strengthen.  He is my chosen one, who pleases me.  I have put my Spirit upon him.  He will bring justice to the nations" (Isaiah 42:1).

In Matthew 21:12-14 we read, "Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice.  He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves!"

The prophet Isaiah prophesied that the Lord's Servant would not only bring justice and equality for all, but also healing and support to the poor, marginalized, and crushed in spirit.  While the temple merchants regularly carried out their business at exorbitant, unfair prices, the poor and sick begged at the Temple for help.  Jesus attended to their needs that Holy Monday, but the leaders were outdone,.  The Bible states, "The blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them.  The leading priests and teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, 'Praise God for the Son of David.'  But the leaders were indignant (Matt. 21:14-15).

With all that is happening in our world today, aren't you glad that our Savior, Master, Redeemer, King of kings is a Just God?
