King Celebration: Mighty Like A Stream

Below are questions I posed to my WLBJ Radio audience the week of January 26, 2004 in preparation for Black History Month, and after reading the book entitled Like A Mighty Stream: The March On Washington, August 28, 1963 by Patrik Henry Bass. Test your knowledge of the March On Washington by answering these questions in the comments section of this post. Hint: All of the questions are answered in an older post on the Jesus Saves Ministries blog. Mighty Like A Stream is one of five books Jesus Saves Ministries will be giving away during Black History Month beginning Friday, February 1, 2008.

Thank you for visiting this blog and telling your church family, colleagues and co-workers about Jesus Saves Ministries.

1. What year was the Civil Rights Bill passed?
2. Who was A. Phillip Randolph?
3. What two events in 1955 gave birth to the Civil Rights Movement?
4. Who was Anna Arnold Hedgeman?
5. Name one of three women who provided musical numbers at the March on Washington?
6. What church assembled more than 80,000 cheese sandwiches, and packed each bag with a sandwich, marble cake and an apple?
7. Who was Medgar Evers?
8. Name the six black organizers of the March On Washington?
9. Name the four white organizers of the March On Washington?
10. Name one of four women recognized by Daisy Bates at the March on Washington?

Jesus Saves Response to Blogger Sherre Culbreath

Sherre, Thank you for your comments, We've Got Mail From Blogger Sherre Culbreath. Dr. Freddie Haynes spoke, delivering a powerful word from the Lord, at the Simmons College of Kentucky first Urban Upgrade Church Growth and Leadership Conference held at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Louisville November 11-13, 2007.

Whenever I hear Dr. Haynes speak, I am reminded of the love of God for people of color. Dr. Haynes' message that Tuesday night was profound and stressed the importance of the role of education in uplifting our people. I am glad our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has given him, and men and women of God like him, the mental acumen, desire, and backbone to speak truth to power in the 21st century. If ever we've needed it, we, as our ancestors use to say, "sho do need it now."

I was able to speak with Dr. Haynes briefly after his message that Tuesday night. He remembered our radio conversation Rev. Dr. Freddie Haynes Takes Survey On Black Church as I showed him the Jesus Saves Newsletter in which it appeared. I am grateful he took the time to speak with me on air. I believe it is important for us to get to know what preachers think about the Word of God and issues affecting our people. You can't always get that from a 30-minute sermon, and too many preachers nowadays, as Dr. Freddie Haynes said in my interview with him, are "playing games with the gospel."

Thanks for blogging with Jesus Saves Ministries.

Angela, I enjoyed reading the interview Rev. Dr. Freddie Haynes Takes Survey On Black Church you conducted with Rev. Haynes. I also enjoyed reading the article introducing the mind-sets of the different social advocates that are spread out in these United States.

In my opinion, "social awareness" is so important to the Christian plight. Jesus was and is still concerned about the cares of His "people". He sought out ways and means to help them overcome those obstacles that prevent them from continuing to walk in sin. Jesus also provided wise counsel because he cared for the well being of others. His desire is for us to succeed emotionally, socially, mentally, and spiritually. Once we develop the aforementioned areas of our life then we will be more prepared to succeed financially because we will be more focused.

Rev. Jackson said something that was immensely significant "...it's not hard being a pimp...its hard [earning] a college degree...MBA...[completing] law school..." As an African American woman, I am persuaded that we as a culture will better understand the importance of what our ancestors fought for if we embrace and nurture the realization that our overall well-being is a key principle to our outlook on life, our growth, and development. We all know that freedom is not free. It is for this very reason that negligent African American men & women need to work harder to foster a healthy emotional, social, mental, and spiritual balance. As African American men/women continue to conform to the depictions ascribed by others, and see themselves as victims they will continue to see themselves as down trodden and looked over.

It takes a "real" man or woman--a man or women concerned for the upward progression of his/her family to pursue a degree (AS, BA, MA, PhD), seek alternative forms of continued education (trade or vocational school), and/or surround oneself in positive environments. A well-learned African American man/woman is the fuel that educates those that not only comes after them, but those who are yet here and lost. Minister Price thank you for all that you do to keep our community and culture informed.

WLOU Radio Receives Stellar Nomination

By: Rev. Angela Lee Price

Somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas while we were digging out the Christmas decorations, my husband, radio programmer and Morning Drive announcer "Legendary Dr. Bill Price" (photo left) told me that WLOU Radio had been nominated for a Stellar Award in gospel radio.

I thought at first my ears were deceiving me. You see, he was in the basement watching television and I was in the kitchen when he broke the news. All I could hear he shout up was, "Hey baby, mumble, mumble, mumble...Stella, it's on!" I replied, "It's on?" He said with a tone of jubilation, "Yeah baby, it's onnnn!" When I got to the basement, I took one look at the television in disappointment and said, "I thought you said it was on. I don't see it?" He gave me a questioning look and said, "What are you talking about?" I said, "How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I thought you said it was on." Well, of course, we both got a few chuckles out of that one.

Who could have thunk it (excuse my grammar)? Louisville's own WLOU Radio nominated for a Stellar Award! Bill didn't believe it either. He had gotten a couple of phone calls from the Stellar Awards and didn't return them immediately not knowing that the station had been nominated. He later confirmed that the station had indeed been nominated by several people in the gospel music industry. We discovered this afternoon, however, that WLOU did not make the finalist list.

From left to right: Angela Lee Price, Bill Price, Angela Carter-Lanon, Kevin Willis, and listeners celebrate Bill's birthday on air Friday, October 6, 2007.

We are so very grateful WLOU received a nomination. We thank God and those who considered WLOU and the work that Bill, General Manager Archie Dale, and the staff are doing to provide quality gospel music, and programming in the Louisville market. Bill eats, sleeps, and dreams radio. No matter the frequency, AM or FM, or the genre, R&B, classic R&B, Hip Hop, blues, jazz, or gospel, he has commanded of his on-air staffs over the years, and of himself, excellence in radio.

The 23rd Annual Stellar Awards will be held January 12th at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. Kirk Franklin, Byron Cage, and CeCe Winans will host this year's event. For the list of radio station finalists for 2008 Stellar Awards by category, go to Radio and Records. Click on the "Format News" link, and "Gospel," and then "Gospel Radio Honored By Stellar."
