Tavis Smiley To Speak At Canaan Christian Church

By: Angela Lee Price
I call him my “boo!” I loves me some Tavis Smiley, and I want the world to know he’s coming to Louisville. Acclaimed author, talk show host, and commentator Tavis Smiley will be speaking at a luncheon on Friday, May 5th at the conference, Destiny 2006: Creating An Agenda for Change at Canaan Christian Church, 2840 Hikes Lane.

Tavis puts a "smiley" on my face whenever I see his face or hear his voice. He is a man full of faith, and it is evident in all that he does that Jesus Christ is his Lord. I am proud of Tavis particularly for the work that he has done with the State of the Black Union summits on C-Span in creating a national platform for African American dialogue and agenda building, and for his role in bringing to completion the latest best-selling collaborative project, Covenant With Black America.

Canaan Church pastor Dr. Walter Malone says the purpose of Destiny 2006 is to “address four critical areas of concern: education, economics, health, and violence by providing the facts and executing specific goals in each area of concern.” The luncheon is from 12:30—2:00 p.m. The cost is $50 per person. Call the church at 459-5578 for additional information. Tavis Smiley, a man with a handsome "smiley" face, a big heart, and a lot of love for African Americans, gets my vote as a man who's keeping the faith.
Remember, it is not Buddha, Confucius, Muhammad, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!

A Good Hare Day On WLOU Radio

By: Angela Lee Price

Saturday, April 15th was a good "hare" day on the radio. No, not because many children were eating chocolate bunny rabbits and hunting Easter eggs. It was a good "hare" day because Drs. Julia Hare and Renee Campbell Mapp were in the house on WLOU!

Dr. Julia Hare, National Executive Director of The Black Think Tank, Social Psychologist, Relationships Specialist, Radio and TV commentator, is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic presenters on major podiums today and remains in high demand for presentations to civic/social corporate and political organizations. She will be the keynote speaker for the Wesley House Circle of Caring Dinner on Thursday, April 20th at the Humana Building, 500 West Main Street.

One of the most brillant women in America spoke with me briefly by phone from California about her upcoming visit to Louisville. Among other things, she told me she and Tavis Smiley recently shared the stage to discuss the book, Covenant With Black America and providing solutions to issues plaguing African Americans. Yes, it was a good "hare" day indeed!

Dr. Renee Campbell Mapp is President & CEO of Wesley House Community Services, 803 East Washington Street. Dr. Campbell Mapp has done a fabulous job over eight years in putting Wesley House on the map in the Phoenix/Butchertown district. Dr. Campbell Mapp and I often joke about having two last names with no hyphen. Saturday, however, our phone conversation centered on how this year's Circle of Caring honoree WAVE-3 TV news anchor Dawne Gee was selected to receive an award for providing hope to the community.

Below are five-minute excerpts of my interviews with Drs. Hare and Campbell Mapp. It is my hope that you will prayerfully consider supporting the Circle of Caring Dinner by purchasing tickets or with a contribution in any amount. I have seen first hand the tremendous work that is being done for women at Wesley House Community Services.

Tickets are $100.00 per person, or $1,500 for a table of 10. To reserve seats, contact Dr. Renee Campbell Mapp at 583-8317.

Restoration Of Voting Rights

Please join me in supporting Raoul Cunningham and the NAACP in their efforts ensure passage of House Bill 480 automatically restoring voting rights to former felons. Below is a letter Raoul sent to the Kentucky General Assembly recently.

Angela Lee Price
Founder
Jesus Saves Ministries

By: Raoul Cunningham

Today, Kentucky remains one of three states that does not have some form of automatic restoration of voting rights for former convicted felons who have completed their sentence and made full restitution. The provision denying felons the right to vote has been in place since the adoption of Kentucky’s first Constitution in 1792.

In 2001, the General Assembly passed legislation, KRS 196.045, requiring the Department of Corrections “to implement a simplified process for the restoration of civil rights to eligible felony offenders.” During the past several years, there has been a steady decline in the number of restorations granted. In the 2003 fiscal year, 1,231 Kentuckians had their rights restored. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2005, the number dropped to 464.

House Bill 480 will automatically restore voting rights to felony offenders.

The Louisville Branch NAACP is asking that you whole heartedly support HB 480.

Voting is a fundamental right of democracy and should not continue to be denied to the more than 145,000 Kentucky felon offenders who have paid their debt to society.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Raoul Cunningham, President
Louisville Branch NAACP

This letter was sent from the Louisville Branch to members of the General Assembly in support of Restoration of Voting Rights to former felons, and was published in the NAACP Newsletter, March 2006.

Restoring Voting Rights

This editorial appeared in the Courier Journal Newspaper on February 22, 2006, A12, and was reprinted in the Louisville Branch NAACP Newsletter, March 2006.

Eighty percent of Americans polled two years ago favored automatic restoration of voting rights for ex-cons who have served their time and otherwise have met the terms of their release.

Unfortunately, Kentucky remains one of just three states where, instead, the restoration of voting rights to felons remains the governor’s exclusive prerogative. It’s a bad, arbitrary system, and civil rights groups, churches and civil libertarians are right to be pushing for passage of House Bill 480, which calls for placing on November’s ballot a constitutional amendment to allow automatic restoration of voting rights.

It’s unfair and counterproductive to insist that people coming out of prison live responsibly while withholding from them the rights of responsible citizenship. They remain hostages to a system dating to the 19th Century, when disenfranchisement laws were adopted as one of many ways to deny black citizens the vote.

In the 21 Century, these antiquated laws have left nearly five million Americans separated from their voting rights, including 13 percent of all African American men. The impact plays out differently in different locales, but those who have studied the issue have found that in some close elections, current members of Congress would not have won if significant portions of the constituency had not been disenfranchised.

Status-quo, incumbent-friendly politics are clearly a factor in keeping these laws on the books. Republicans fear that ex-cons would be more likely to vote for Democrats, while Democrats fear that pushing pushing too hard for restoring voting rights will get them tagged as soft on crime. But such overt political considerations shouldn’t prevent Kentucky from breaking with the past.

Passage of HB 480 would be a step toward true justice for thousands of Kentuckians who have made mistakes, especially by becoming substance abusers, but who are making good and deserve a second chance at full, productive citizenship.

When your spiritual gifts are teaching, administration and prophecy, it goes without saying that those gifts must be properly developed through rigorous study of the Word of God. Just as my spiritual gifts come in threes, so do the motivations that lead to the announcement of my call to the ministry. Those motivations were my mother’s lifelong battle with schizophrenia, my passion for polemics and apologetics, and the ministry of Rev. Dr. Kevin Cosby.

My mother, who celebrated her 72nd birthday this month (October 11, 2005), has suffered from schizophrenia most of my life. The illness was exacerbated by the stresses of poverty, her husband abandoning the family and never paying child support, and a so-called deacon-turned-pastor who preyed on her illness and her three children for more than thirty years. Life worsened to the point of my running away from home my senior year in high school to live with Dr. Cosby’s uncle and aunt, William and Beatrice Bush, and their family.

I bless God for placing me with such a loving Christian family. Mrs. Bush helped me to understand that as the oldest child I could not abandon my mother because she would need me if she stood any hope of getting better. My mother’s condition worsened while I was in college at the University of Louisville.
Going through the ordeal of taking out three mental inquest warrants, and my brother taking out a fourth, against the woman I once knew as sole nurturer, role model and protector was not only agonizing, but became a source of depression until I began to rely on God. My mother was very non-compliant, became a recluse and was addicted to television. She watched a considerable amount of Christian programming, particularly late at night.

Mrs. Masie Griggs Lee, now a member of St. Stephen Church, was once a follower of Bennie Hinn Ministries. For years, Hinn kept telling her she was healed in the name of Jesus, and that all she needed to do was rebuke the devil and lay hands on the television to receive her miracle. Whenever she believed his lies, my family and me in particular as I was her sole social security disability income payee, limited guardian, and power of attorney, had to war against the spirit that possessed her mind and body.

As I began to study the Word of God and pray earnestly for the Lord’s help, He began providing resources, through trained doctors and nurses, and information, not only on mental illness, medications and nutrition, but also on dealing with the demonic through proper spiritual warfare techniques, cults and false doctrines within the pale of orthodoxy, and the occult. My experiences have developed within me certain sensitivities for those suffering needlessly, and I want to do all necessary in accordance with Luke 4:18-19 to dispel myths that keep souls in bondage.

Internet discernment ministries have been another source of motivation for a public announcement of my call to the ministry on December 16, 2001. For several years prior to the announcement, I conducted independent research on the aforementioned subjects on literally two hundred or more discernment ministries websites. The information I learned, and continue to learn, has totally reshaped the way I view 21st century Christianity. Of all my years of web surfing, however, I have encountered only one African American site devoted to polemics and apologetics. Consequently, I hope to launch a website to address false trends in the church from an African American perspective.

Finally, my pastor Rev. Dr. Kevin Cosby has influenced my call to the ministry in countless ways. His knowledge of African American history and African American church history is unparalleled. His anointed teachings and sermons of the early 1990s not only helped St. Stephen Church grow exponentially, but helped me mature in the faith and be delivered from psychological torture and abuse at the hands of a white Jesus firmly rooted in racism, and deeply embedded in my mind. Whenever I am asked to preach, I am mindful, as the Lord leads, to encourage continued study of African American history and culture.

Dr. Kevin Cosby is the primary reason I am now attending Simmons College of Kentucky. I know that any degree obtained at Simmons with Dr. Cosby at the helm will be recognized nationally at accredited institutions as proof of diligent, legitimate study of the Word of God. I desire nothing less for my ministry.

The Emergent Church Alert!

By: Angela Lee Price

There are so many new aberrant and heretical movements popping up within Christianity that, truly, it is hard to keep up with them all. And, it appears, sadly, that there are far too few pastors within the Black Church willing to speak boldly and consistently about them in an attempt to defend the faith.

There are a couple of brave souls defending the faith. On the national scene, Pastor John Cherry of From The Heart Church speaks boldly and consistently about the dangers of the prosperity message. Locally, my pastor, Dr. Kevin Cosby of St. Stephen Church speaks consistently about the “Joy Boy” preachers, as he calls the purveyors of the prosperity message, and he’s even dedicated an entire month-long sermon series entitled Beware the Counterfeiters to warning Christians about false teachers. He kicked butt and “named names!” That’s it, on the pastoral level, to my knowledge.

Although I am not a licensed minister, I am a radio announcer, communicator, writer and researcher who has dedicated almost nine years to diligently studying material from the online discernment community. I launched Jesus Saves Newsletter in September 2005 out of love for the people around me. I desperately want them to see what the Lord is showing me about apostasy in the last days.

The Emerging Church movement is sweeping the nation, appealing to young Christians with its “unplugged” MTV-like, dimmed-lights approach to introspective Christianity. David and Deborah Dombrowski of Lighthouse Trails Research Project, Al and Jean Dager of Media Spotlight, and Roger Oakland of Understand the Times have all written about the players, background, tenets and concerns of the Emerging, or “Emergent” as some refer to it, Church movement.

The following is a fact sheet from Understand the Times International that summarizes some of the major characteristics of the Emerging Church Movement and the direction it is headed. Brian McLaren is the prominent promoter and leader of the Emerging Church Movement. On his website, Roger Oakland states, “Every sincere Bible believing Christian needs to be aware of what is happening and what role the Emerging Church Movement plays in the last days apostasy that the Bible foretells.”

Facts to know about current trends happening in the name of Christ that are undermining the authority of scripture and leading towards the Emerging Church:

Scripture is no longer the ultimate authority for many well known leaders of the new evangelicalism.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is being replaced by humanistic methods that promote church growth and a social gospel.

There is more and more emphasis on “what’s in it for me” in the “here and now”, and less and less concern regarding the warnings of scripture regarding the imminent return of Jesus and a coming judgment ahead for planet earth.

More and more Christian leaders are looking for the Kingdom of God to be established here on earth by human effort and deny that Jesus Christ will rule and reign in a literal millennial period that is to come.

Many bridges are being established that lead in the direction of unity with the Roman Catholic Church.

An experiential mystical form of Christianity is being promoted to attract and reach the postmodern generation called the “Emerging Church.”

We are being told that Christianity needs to be re-invented in order to provide meaning for this generation.

Christianity is being dumbed-down as the Word of God comes under attack and images and sensual experiences are being promoted as the key to experiencing God.

In order to re-invent Christianity we are told we need to go back to the past and find out what kinds of experiences were successful to attract people to Christianity. These experiences include icons, candles, incense, liturgy and the sacraments, particularly the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Many church leaders are beginning to consider that the Reformation went too far. They are reexamining the claims of the “Church fathers” that communion is more than a symbol and for remembrance and that Jesus actually becomes present in the communion wafer.

There is a growing trend towards an ecumenical unity for the cause of world peace that claims there are many ways to God and that Jesus Christ is not the only way.

Please visit the following websites for additional information on the Emerging Church Movement and write me with your findings after your research is complete. I would like to know whether you agree or disagree with the online assessments of the Emerging Church Movement:

Ready Or Not, Here He Comes! Are You Sure You're Ready?

By: Michael Lee

My brother, Michael Lee at the Dome of the Rock and Western Wailing Wall, Jerusalem, Israel, August, 2000.

Scripture: Rev 6:12-17 (GNV):

“And I saw the Lamb break open the sixth seal. There was a violent earthquake, and the sun became black like coarse black cloth, and the moon turned completely red like blood. The stars fell down to the earth, like unripe figs falling from the tree when a strong wind shakes it. The sky disappeared like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the rulers and the military chiefs, the rich and the powerful, and all other people, slave and free, hid themselves in caves and under rocks on the mountains. They called out to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the eyes of the one who sits on the throne and from the anger of the Lamb! The terrible day of their anger is here, and who can stand up against it?"

When I was a child, all of the kids in the neighborhood spent many summer days and evenings playing games. The girls would play jump rope, hop scotch, jacks, and sing those songs like "Oh, Mary Mack, all dressed in black...." I have two sisters, so I had to listen to all those songs that drove me nuts.

The boys would play basketball on tire rims or plastic crates, pitch up tackle football, and when we were a little older, we would play concrete tackle in the middle of 20th street in west Louisville. When we all would get together to play, the boys and the girls, we would play games like Softball, Tag, Frozen Catcher, and Red Light.

There was no game I liked more than "Hide and Go Seek." Whoever was “it” would have to put their face up against a tree, close their eyes, and count to 100 or what ever number everyone agreed upon. That person had to go and find everybody, and when he or she saw somebody they would shout, “I see you, Michael hiding behind that bush. You are going be it!” And the person who was found would run back as fast as he or she could to touch base before the person who was “it” got there.

The New Testament is very clear about the fact that Jesus is coming back. He’s coming back for two reasons, to get his Church and bring wrath and Judgment. The Bible says, "No man knows the day or the hour, not the angels, not the Son, but the Father only." Are you ready?

Noah preached for decades the same message. It’s going to rain. For decades, he built a ship on dry land. He had one message. It’s going to rain. Jesus says that it was just like any other ordinary day. People were eating and drinking and getting married and being given in marriage. They didn’t have a clue that God had had enough! Then the rains came suddenly and washed everyone who was not in the arc away.

When Jesus came the first time, he came as a humble servant. Revelation 5:9 says He was killed, and by his sacrificial death, he bought for God people from every tribe, language, nation and race. But when He comes again, He’s coming in great wrath, anger and judgment.

The scene depicted in Revelation chapter 6 tells of a time of great trouble. All the man made institutions are turned up side down. Natural disasters and great calamity were the order of the day. The turmoil will be such that all of the Kings of the earth, rulers and military chiefs, the rich and the powerful and all other people slave and free will try to hide themselves from God in caves and under rocks on the mountains. But you can never win a game of "Hide and Go Seek" when the one who is “IT” is the One with all seeing eyes! Are you sure you're ready?

Michael will be preaching his initial sermon on April 23rd at 4:00 p.m. at Joshua Tabernacle Baptist Church, 426 South 15th Street, Louisville, Kentucky.

(An abbreviation of a message delivered on March 19, 2006 to Joshua Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky. Michael Lee is an ordained deacon at Joshua Tabernacle Baptist Church, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and brother of Angela Lee Price.)
