New Year, New You Workshop Helps Ex-Offenders Expunge Records, Regain Voting Rights

By: Min. Angela Lee Price

The first in a series of "New Year, New You" workshops, Expungement and Voting Rights was held on Saturday, January 21st at the St. Stephen Family Life Center in Louisville. The workshop was designed to help ex-offenders become productive citizens by providing them with the information and resources needed to obtain criminal record expungements and regain voting rights in time for the 2012 Presidential Election. Attendees asked questions, and obtained applications and materials from presenters Min. Angela Lee Price on restoration of voting rights and attorney Josephine Buckner on criminal record expungements. Lawrence and JoAnn Simpson (photo left), members of Evangel Christian Church were two of 12 workshop attendees.

Pictured are Lawrence and JoAnn Simpson, Stacee Spurling, LaMont Anothy, Nathan Morris (back) and Larry George (kneeling).
"It is so easy to look at individuals and say, you did the crime, you suffer the consequences. However, when you look at Kentucky versus other states across the nation, you discover that there is more going on here than meets the eye," Min. Price stated. "Kentucky permanently bars former felons from voting without gubernatorial petition. That is counter to God's law of forgiveness and reconciliation. That is one reason why I have been helping former felons regain their voting rights for seven years," stated Price. Kentucky and Virginia are the last two remaining states that permanently disenfranchise all people with felony convictions, unless they receive individual, discretionary, executive clemency," states the Brennan Center for Justice on page 4 of an extensive national report, Restoring The Right To Vote released in 2008. In stark contrast, voting rights are automatically restored in 13 states including Indiana and the District of Columbia once former felons are released from prison. In two states, Maine and Vermont, even prisoners may vote.

"Alot of times when people start an endeavor with the court system, they don't know where to start, and taking that first step is often the hardest step. The fact that they can see the forms, get information on how to fill them out properly, find out where to go, how much it is going to cost, they can make their plan and be successful," stated Josephine Buckner.

St. Stephen New Members On God's Team, Win With Jesus!

By:  Min. Angela Lee Price

When Jesus asked Matthew, the tax collector to follow Him, Matthew wanted everyone to know he had made his connection with God. He invited friends and guests and hosted a party at his home celebrating his new life in Christ (Matthew 5:27-29 and 2 Corinthian 5:17).

On July 23rd &; 24th, the St. Stephen Church Member Services Ministry hosted a Matthew Party, a "Connection Celebration Weekend" for new members, their families and guests. Connection Celebration recognized, during and after worship services, all new members who have connected with God and St. Stephen since June of 2010. The theme was "I'm a Member of God's Team!" New members enjoyed light refreshments, received "God's Team" fun favors, entered drawings to win gifts, and signed up for new members' and Bible Fellowship classes and ministries at receptions held at the Louisville and Southern Indiana campuses and Dosker Manor location after worship services.

Winning with Christ and sportin' a "I Love My Church" t-shirt, new member Maurice Thomas holds the gift he won at the celebration, bookends shaped like a football that read "Christ Is Life." Maurice is a member of the Building In Christ adult bible fellowship class. He got connected to the Men's Ministry and Mighty Men's Choir shortly after joining in 2010. Also, he is a member of the Prayer Ministry.
New members Jenelle Jackson and her son Demetrius Yarbrough are on the winning team in more ways than one, each winning gifts in random drawings. Demetrius shows off his children's gift basket.

"We want everyone to know what great things God is doing in the lives of our new members and in the life of our church," stated Member Services Director Min. Angela Lee Price. "St. Stephen is on "the grow!" We had close to 600 new members joined St. Stephen Church in 2010, and so far this year, approximately 300 new members have united with us.

New member Deonta Simpson (in black) with his mother Angela Simpson-Reed (in green) and family members. Deonta participated in worship by recognizing all new members during the Welcome on the Louisville campus.

"Connection Celebration helps our new members feel welcomed and provides another opportunity for ministry leaders and members to meet them. It provides an opportunity, too for them to get connected to Bible fellowships, small groups and ministries," Min. Price stated.

New members were encouraged to bring families and friends. Approximately 45 guests attended the Connection receptions over the weekend. Six guests connected with St. Stephen Church, four at the reception after the 9:40 a.m. worship service. Connection Celebration will be held again in November.

Dr. Lance Watson Upgrades Spirits at Urban Upgrade Conference

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
In this season of thanksgiving, I am thankful for a two-day revival this week that has my spirit soaring. My spirit has been definitely upgraded, and uplifted by the anointed preaching of Dr. Lance Watson, St. Paul Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Watson was the guest speaker November 15th and 16th for the 4th annual Simmons College of Kentucky Urban Upgrade Church Growth Conference hosted by St. Stephen Church in Louisville Kentucky.

On Monday night, Dr. Watson's message was "I'm Taking My Ques From God." He came from the book of Genesis and the story of Noah building the arc. He talked about how we often bless God in memory by recalling what He has done, but we don't often bless Him in our creative imagination in thinking of  what He can do through us in the future. Noah didn't know what rain was, and he had never seen an arc before, yet Noah took his ques from God. Watson preached about the ridicule Noah endured especially in the years between the completion of the arc and rain. We need to takes our ques, not from man, not from the recession, not from our present situation and circumstance, but from God! We need to remember that what we see is temporary, but what we don't see is eternal. I'm taking my ques from God!

Last night, Dr. Watson's sermon was "I'm A Real Piece of Work!" from Ephesians 2: 4-10. This sermon offered strong encouragement to people struggling from low self esteem and the walking doormat syndrome. This sermon was an encouragment to anyone who has ever been discriminated against, maginalized, and criticized. Dr. Watson talked about Picasso's work being valuable not because of the type of paint used, nor the canvass painted on, but because of who the maker, Picasso was. Watson said we are valuable because of who our Maker is and the gift that He has given believers. Watson went into Picasso-like detail in painting an elegant masterpiece of our extraordinary "workmanship" as creations of All Mighty God. You need to know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made! You are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. You're a real piece of work!

So, I am thanking God for the conference, the preacher and the preached Word!  I'm an upgraded spirit!

Decision Counselors Witness for Jesus At Hallelujah Fall Festival

The St. Stephen Church Decision Counselor's Ministry spoke with kids and attendees about the "A-B-C's" of salvation and joining the church at the Hallelujah Fall Festival hosted by the Children's Shine Ministry on Friday, October 29th. "We're not here to lock up anyone, but to help set you free," Decision Counselor Director Min. Angela Lee Price told the children ages 11 and under.
Approximately 400 children and adults attended the three-hour event that included games, contests, and a deejay. Shine Ministry Director Denise Scrivner gathered the children and gave a 15-minute lesson on the differences between the Hallelujah Fall Festival and Halloween.  "We want to educate the children about the history of Halloween as a pagan holiday.  We do not celebrate Halloween and have asked that children not wear scary costumes," stated Scrivner. Festival goers were treated to hot dogs, and popcorn, and each child received a bag of candy at the end of the festival. Decision Counselors, dressed as sheriffs in teal  Saddle Ridge Ranch t-shirts, cowboy hats, handkerchiefs, and sheriff's badges, and gave away ten "Rounding Up Questions...Driving Home Answers Saddle Ridge Ranch" children's t-Shirts and a gift basket in separate drawings.  Children who stopped by the sheriff's station also received stickers with words "Admit," "Believe," and "Confess" to help them remember what to do to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  The festival was held on the Southern Indiana campus on Saturday afternoon as well.

Ex-Offenders Make Application to Regain Voting Rights

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
Shonda Blakemore, left with Min Angela Lee Price, attended the “Let My People Vote” Restoration of Voting Rights and Expungement Workshop held Saturday, October 2nd at the St. Stephen Family Life Center in Louisville. The workshop was a partnership with the Men's Ministry.  She and four applicants received word on October 6th from the Department of Corrections in Louisville that their applications have passed round one of the approval process and have been forwarded to the Department of Corrections and Governor’s office in Frankfort for final approval.

Kentucky and Virginia are the last two remaining states that permanently disenfranchise all people with felony convictions, unless they receive individual, discretionary, executive clemency (see attached Brennan Center for Justice "Restoring The Right To Vote" document). "This is a primary reason St. Stephen Church and Jesus Saves Ministries are involved as advocates for ex-offenders, this and the fact that ours are ministries of reconciliation and social justice," states Min. Price. "We track applications through the entire process, and have shared the testimonies and stories of many of our applicants in Jesus Saves Newsletters and journals, on the Jesus Saves Ministries Blog, on the Jesus Saves Ministries and St. Stephen Church social networks and elsewhere to demonstrate the move of God in their lives. The laws in Kentucky and Virginia need revision, especially when you consider that voting rights are automatically restored after release from prison in neighboring states Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, 10 other states, and the District of Columbia. And even prisoners may vote in Maine and Vermont. Their voting rights are never revoked."
Archia Kinnard, right with her daughters and attendee Shonda Blakemore, was the presenter on expungements at the October 2nd workshop. She is Asst. Supervisor for Expungement and Information Services at the Hall of Justice in Louisville and has been processing District Court expungements for 12 years. She and Min. Price conducted a "Let My People Vote" workshop for Dismas Charities in Portland on August 25th.  The first in the series of workshops was held on August 12th for the Shawnee Justice Reinvestment Pilot Project.

Two applicants, Connie Wells-Cooksey and Kenneth Braxton, regain their rights to vote and hold public office in late March and both say they will be voting in the November midterm election. In all, voting rights were restored to 21 former felons through this ex-offender advocacy initiative, and the Louisville Branch NAACP modeled their first-time felons program after our initiative to help more than 100 former felons regain voting rights for the 2008 presidential election.

Applications are still be accepted.  Call Min. Angela Lee Price at St. Stephen Church, 502-583-6798, Ext. 6804, or at Jesus Saves Ministries, 502-415-1001.

"Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked"  Psalm 82:3-4.

Bishop Victor Couzens Encourages Men to "Man Up!"

By: Min. Angela Lee Price

Men's Day choir processional.  The theme this year was "Man Up."
Bishop Victor Couzens, Pastor, Inspirational Baptist Church, Cincinnati, Ohio, was the Men's Day speaker at my home church, St. Stephen Church, Louisville, Kentucky on Sunday, September 12th.

His 11:30 sermon was entitled, While Men Slept, based on Matt 13:24-29. He said, "Whenever and where ever God sows seed there is always a very specific assignment attached to the seed God has sown... You are the salt of the each and light of the world. You are called to penetrate and illuminate.. The devil ought to hate to see you coming because he should know that you will do severe damage to his kingdom," he said.

Pastor Kevin Cosby with Bishop Victor Couzens and Men's Choir.
"We always run the risk of encountering satanic attack. It comes to test and verify who you are... It is time for men to wake up so that God can use you to turn tares into wheat. God has hoodlum unbelievers who are tares, but if we reach them, they will get saved... God is waiting on us to wake up, pray up, sing up, lift up, and man up. Satan is only successful when men sleep," said Couzens.

"Men who won't invest in the stock market, but buy a lottery ticket every Friday are asleep. Men who put on $500 clothes to drive a $40,000 car only to park it in front of a house they are renting are asleep. Men who check their tire pressure before checking their blood pressure are asleep, he told the congregation

Bishop Couzens called the 11:30 worship congregation to the altar for prayer at the close of service.  To view additional video click here.

First Annual Ladies' Conference Victorious In Deed

By:  Min. Angela Lee Price

The Victorious Ladies' Ministry of Victorious World Christian Center hosted their first annual Women's Conference, Position Yourself for the Promise, July 22nd & 23rd, at the Corinthian Life Center, Louisville, KY. Guest speakers included Denita Kinnard, King Solomon Baptist Church, Louisville, KY, Evangelist Mary Rieves, Cathedral of Worship, St. Louis, MO, Min. Angela Lee Price, St. Stephen Church, Louisville, KY and Rev. Yvonne McCoy, Canaan Christian Church, Louisville, KY.

Denita Kinnard's message was entitled, The Promise of the Holy Spirit, based on Acts 1: 1-8. "As witnesses, our job is Kingdom Building...I am not ashamed of the Gospel whether I'm in the building or at Kroger's," Kinnard stated.

Evangelist Mary Rieves preached from Ruth 1: 8-16, "Seeing Beyond My Now." "There are three types of women in the story of Ruth and Naomi, the Leaving Woman, Orpha; the Cleaving Woman, Ruth; and the Believeing Woman, Naomi. "Ruth obeyed Naomi, and her obedience got her to the promise...Our problem is we don't obey leadership's call to pray at 6:00 a.m., but we want God to pay our mortgage," Rieves stated. She said, "God tests us to see if we believe that what He says will surely come to pass."

My  sermon was entitled, "Now, Run And Tell That, based on John 20:17 and Mary Magadalene's encounter with Jesus at the empty tomb. "Mary, a woman once possessed by seven demons, received a position of promise  because she started early, stayed fit, stayed late and stuck with it. If you don't know Jesus as Lord and Savior, accept him early, while it is still dark. Don't wait until later in life, on a Saturday or Sunday. Today is the day of salvation," I said.  "We need to train up our children early by sending them to vacation bible school, and teaching them to pray, "Now, lay me down to sleep....we need to do these things early."

Rev. Yvonne McCoy preached from Psalm 1 with the message, "Position Yourself For the Promise."  We should not keep company with immoral people, nor take their advice for anything, she said.  You think that you can lift them up, but they will only bring you down."

Interview with Rapper Snoop Dogg's Mother Evangelist Beverly Broadus Green

By: Min. Angela Lee Price

I sat down with rapper Snoop Dogg's mother, Evangelist Beverly Brodus Green after 8:00 a.m. worship service Derby weekend at St. Stephen Church, Louisville, Kentucky for a one-on-one interview about her son, the famous rapper, and her call to the preaching ministry and book, Real Love, the agape love that God has for us. Evangelist Green says Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Cordozar Broadus, was raised in the church. He went to Sunday school, sang in the choir, and to bible study. She prays for her son constantly. She believes God has a call on his life and wants to see him turn his life around and reconnect with his Christian faith.

Antioch Baptist Church Celebrates 138th Church Anniversary

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
On Sunday, April 25th, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky celebrated its 138 church anniversary with Rev. Kevin Cosby, Sr Pastor, St. Stephen Church, Louisville as guest speaker. Rev. Cosby preached from 1 Samuel 16:4-19 from the subject, "The Nobody That Nobody Noticed." Because David was the youngest of his father's sons, it didn't occur to Jesse that David could be king. David was the nobody that nobody noticed. Cosby stated the story is in the bible to encourage somebody who has been overlooked. People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

Bishop Victor Couzens: St. Stephen's Men's Day Speaker

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
A powerful package of preaching power, Bishop Victor Couzens, Senior Pastor Inspirationl Baptist Church, Cincinnati, Ohio was the Men's Day guest speaker at St. Stephen Church, Louisville, Kentucky on September 13th. Bishop Couzens preached all four services including, "From Maniac to Missionary," at 8:00 a.m., "Blessed, But Bound" at 10:45, and the uniquely crafted and presented 11:30 message, "Where Is Barabbus?"

At the 9:40 service, Bishop Couzens preached, "W.W.F., Wrestling With the Father, from Genesis 32:21-24. In this message on the patriach Jacob wrestling with God, Couzens said, "It's alright to have a checkered past as long as you have a relevant relationship....Before you can go to Canaan, the place of inheritance, you must first go by Jabbok, the place of preparation. God takes things from you, and gives things to you there....God is more concerned about where you are going than where you have been."

Couzens told Sunday morning worshippers at his first appearance at St. Stephen Church, "You've been running and walking, but the Lord wants you to L.I.M.P.- Lean Intentionally on the Master's Provisions."

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Couzens started his preaching ministry at age 14, and his pastoral ministry at 19. He is a candidate for a Masters of Art Degree in Ministry from Indiana Weleyan University, and has served as the third vice president of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.-Young Pastors and Ministers Division. Couzens has been pastoring Inspirational Baptist Church since July 2000, and has grown the church from 300 to more than 1,800 members.

Civil Rights Restored to Tyrone Trumbo, Sr.

Testimony of Tyrone Trumbo, Sr.

I want to thank God first for restoring my right to vote. When I received the certificate in the mail the week of June 22nd, my wife Tiffany and I were estastic. She didn't know how to act. I have four sons, five daughters, and nephews whom I am trying to inspire and keep from making the bad choice I made as a youth. I am trying to be a positive figure for my family and friends.

Secondly, I want to thank my brother for bringing me to St. Stephen Church. Since he brought me 10 years ago, my life has changed. Before then, I was in the streets hustling. Hearing Rev. Cosby preach has inspired me to do the right thing. One of my sons and a daughter have been baptized, and I have met good friends through Sunday school.

Tyrone Trumbo, Sr. with his 7-year-0ld son, Montre at Wednesday Night Bible Study on July 1st. Tryone signs Montre into children's Bible study class.

A friend who had his rights restored last year, Carlton Gibson told me about Rev. Angela and this advocacy program for former felons. It means the world to me to have my rights restored. It makes me feel like I have proven something to myself, my family, my community, and to God, that I am headed in the right direction.

Min. Angela congratulates Tyrone for having civil rights restored, the right to vote and hold public office.

If you are someone you know is interested in applying for restoration of civil rights, e-mail Min. Angela Lee Price at jesussaves1@insightbb.com or call 502-415-1001. The applicant must have completed probation or parole, and all fines and restitution must be paid.

My Pictures from St. Stephen 83rd Church Anniversary Picnic

Min. Angela Lee Price

I have discovered that as a blogger I don't want to just talk about church, but be about it. So, I am sharing in this pictorial post a little bit of what I was able to capture myself of the St. Stephen 83rd Church Anniversary and Picnic.

The choir in this slideshow is the Tabernacle Choir featuring Min. Kevin James. I have a snippet of video on them, and Joe Leavell and The Temple Choir on the Jesus Saves Ministries Social Network. With these two awesome choirs, the Sanctuary Choir, the Voices of Praiz, the Mighty Men, the Women's Choir, our Praise Teams and Indiana and Dosker Manor choirs and children's choir, we worship and praise the Lord at St. Stephen Church. That is for sure!

My Sunday school class, Learning About Jesus sends regards to you. We had a great time at the picnic, as you shall see. If ever you're in Louisville, we would love to have you study the Word with us Sundays at 8:30 a.m. in Room 306 of the St. Stephen Family Life Center.

And yes, there was some dancing going on outside, too. I got some much-needed exercise and did the Electric Slide and tried to pick up on one or two of the new dances by watching the kids. There was a little boy doing a dance called "the Stinky Leg" that caught my attention - lol!

We had a glorious time in the Lord! Wish you were here!
