Those Preachin' Women Conference Salutes First Ladies

By: Min. Angela Lee Price

From left to right: Workshop presenter Rev. Barbara Woods-Washington (Nashville, TN), Mistress of Ceremonies Min. Angela Lee Price (Louisville, KY), Host Pastor and Convener Rev. Kathy Goodwin (Louisville, KY), and Guest Speaker Rev. Cassandra Gray (Shelbyville, KY).

(Louisville, KY)  The four-day Those Preachin' Women Conference in Louisville concluded on Saturday, July 16th with a Celebration of The First Lady Luncheon at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church. Co-Pastor and First Lady, Rev. Cassandra Gray, New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Shelbyville, Kentucky was the guest speaker. St. Stephen Church Associate Minister and Jesus Saves Ministries Founder, Min. Angela Lee Price was mistress of ceremonies.

Conference Convener, host pastor Rev. Kathy Goodwin stated that she too was a first lady when she started in ministry. She believed then that all first ladies were supposed to do was sit on the first row and wear nice hats, clothes, and shoes. She quickly realized that first ladies were often lonely in the since that there were things that happened in ministry that they couldn't discuss with members of the congregation. First ladies are often overlooked for the significant roles they play in serving God along side their husbands in ministry, she stated.

Greencastle Baptist Church, Quinn Chapel AME Church, House of Faith Christian Church, and Right Now Harvest Church were four of several churches represented with their first ladies in attendance. In all, eight first ladies shared insights on their experiences beside their husbands who pastor churches in Kentucky. Several first ladies were ministers who served in roles such as assistant pastor and co-pastor.  Some first ladies expressed a calling to intercessory prayer for their families and congregation.  At least one enjoyed ministering in song, while another stated she enjoyed teaching Sunday school.   Another first lady expressed a call to making members, especially new members feel welcomed in the church. The ladies received gifts from KOG Ministry and Jesus Saves Ministries throughout the luncheon in random drawings.

Guest speaker Rev. Cassandra Gray spoke from Habakkuk 3:16-19 and Matthew 11:12-15 in the message entitled, I Am Not a Cracked Pot. "Ailment, and situations make us feel like we are under such pressure and we can't go on," she stated. Habakkuk goes from questioning God in chapter one to saying yet I will wait patiently on the Lord in chapter three. Gray stated, "We need to say when we can't see it, I will wait on the Lord." We lose heart in the process. The world would have you think you have lost your mind. "The waiting is not about God, it is about us," she stated.

The theme of the conference was Prayer and Praise Under Pressure.  Preachin' women from various Louisville-area churches brought the prayer, praise and the preached Word nightly July 13th - 15th.

By: Min. Angela Lee Price

Rev. Aletha Fields, Cathedral of the Assumption, at Those Preachin' Women Conference last Thursday in Louisville. Rev. Fields' message was entitled, "Keep It 100 and Go Hard," a title she borrowed from the vernacular of the youth she teaches in the Jefferson County Public School System. She and Rev. Dianne Brown, St. Stephen Church preached on Luke 7: 36-ff, the women with the alabaster box. The conference was held July 14-17 with guest preachers speaking all four nights. Coke Memorial United Methodist Church hosted the event that included workshops and a scholarship banquet.

Haste Has No Blessing

Last night's focus on wisdom at the Those Preachin' Women Conference was very powerful. I am glad Abigail was selected as a sermon subject as I honestly have heard very little preaching on her. I was reminded, particularly through Rev. Cassandra Gray's sermon that I wrote a devotional on wisdom a couple of years ago using the same text she used, Proverbs 2: 1-7. The devotional was entitled, "Haste Has No Blessing." It was published in the St. Stephen Church "Get Some Sense" Publication in 2007 and in February 2008 Jesus Saves Newsletter. I have Rev. Lesa Dae, who also preached on Abigail last night, to thank for the devotional as she was the person who originally asked me to write on the text. I pray that it blesses you now!

Haste Has No Blessing!

Proverbs 2: 1-7
(V1) “My child, listen to me and treasure my instruction.
(V2) Tune your ears to wisdom, andconcentrate on understanding.
( V3) Cry out for insight and understanding.
(V4) Search for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure.
(V5) Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.
(V6) For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
(V7) He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly.” (NLT)

Our society has become conditioned to want things quick, fast, and in a hurry. We give alittle and expect to receive a lot. However, an African proverb says,“Haste has no blessing.” Proverbs chapter 2 makes it clear that the“quick-fast-and-in-a-hurry” and the “give-a-little-receive-a lot” philosophies of life are not the ways of God.

Some things, such as gaining wisdom, knowledge, and understanding require considerable time, trust, prayer, and effort. In the opening verses of Proverbs chapter 2, we learn to “listen,” “treasure,” “tune,” “concentrate,” “cry out,” and “search,” for insight and understanding (vs. 1-4). We are to apply serious attention and devotion to the task. We are to give our all to knowing who God is. The Bible says when you do this, “then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. (V5)”

Are you giving more of yourself to the God who has given His all for you? Listen and treasure
divine instruction. Tune your ears to wisdom. Concentrate on God’s Word. Cry out continually in prayer. Search the scriptures daily. The Lord grants knowledge, wisdom and understanding (V 6-7) to those who diligently search for it, and that is a treasure of good sense (V 7), a treasure worth seeking.

"Wisdom, Warfare, and Worship," the Theme of This Year's Those Preachin Women

Under the theme, "Wisdom, Warfare, and Worship," those preaching women take to the pulpit July 14th-17th at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church, Louisville, Kentucky for four dynamic nights of preaching and teaching. Those Preachin' Women, in its third year, has become the premiere gathering of Christian women featuring some of this region's most gifted preaching women.

Rev. Kathy Ogletree Goodwin, Pastor, Coke Memorial United Methodist Church (photo left), and host of this event states, "This event provides an opportunity for women who are called by God, to the ministry of 'Word', to share their preaching gift. This event also provides an opportunity for women to be exposed to and network with other women who share in the 'passion' of preaching the Word of God. This event is about the diversity of preaching and is not a preaching competition. It expresses the greatness of our God and reveals how our great God can and will use all who avail themselves to God. Those Preachin' Women Can Preach!

By: Rev. Angela Lee Price

Those preachin’ women took to the pulpit July 18-20 at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church in Louisville to proclaim the word of God to capacity audiences. A total of eight women delivered messages over three nights on Hagar, Rehab and the Widow’s Mite under the theme, “Obedience, Sacrifice, Commitment: It’s for the Kingdom.”

Preaching Wednesday night on Hagar and obedience, Rev. Ruth Mozee-Taylor, Rev. Dr. Gwen Washington, and Rev. Angela Lee Price.
Preaching Thursday night on Rehab and sacrifice, Min. Vanessa Skillion, Rev. Pearl Gillespie and Rev. Loni Floyd.

Friday night, Rev. Mercia Frierson's and Rev. Cassandra Grey's subject was tithing and commitment based on the passage, The Widow’s Mite. A consecration service and candle-lit prayer vigil caused many to rejoice. All women were asked to wear white.
Civil rights activist and newly appointed Justice Resource Center interim Executive Director Mattie Jones called the service a blessing. She fellowshipped after the service and spoke highly of her predecessor the late Rev. Louis Coleman.

Min. Vanessa Skillion, Rev. Geneva Nelson, and Rev. Linda Bunton lead praise and worship the three nights as various soloists and groups ministered in song. Jesus Saves Ministries gave away Walking with Jesus gifts in random drawings, including a See Yourself As God Sees You hope chest based on Genesis 16:13. Zephra Crawley won the hope chest, and the book, Freedom’s Daughters: The Unsung Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement from 1830 to 1970 by Lynne Olson.

Walking In God's Truth

By: Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook

Today we need men and women who will unashamedly walk in truth. Though it seems to have become popular and ever permissible to tell "little lies," talk back, curse, be sore losers at sports events, and to walk "out of truth," we need those among us who heed Paul's word to the early Christians to "stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness" (Ephesians 6:14).

Christians must stand tall-even if it means standing along-in the truth. "Our word is our bond," my parents used to say, "and we must live life so that others can trust us to do that which we say we shall do." As a ministers, I might add to my parents' phrase, "Our word should be God's Word."

A contemporary songwriter encourges us to sing to God, "Order my steps in your Word." To walk in truth is to go forward with ordered steps, knowing tht the God who created us "hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).

Today, fear no evil, for God is with us-in boardrooms and court rooms and kitchens and bedrooms-even if we should have to "walk through the valley of the shadow of death" (Psalm 23:4). Go forward, my brothers and sisters! Walk in truth, just as Nelson Mandela walked to his freedom, as Harriet Tubman walked to her freedom. Do not look back into the darkness, but look forward t the light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook Challenges W.O.W. Women to Move Beyond Circumstance

Rev. Angela Lee Price

Wow! March came in like a lion as three of the nation's most recognized female pastors took the pulpit at St. Stephen Church last Saturday, March 1st for the Women of Wisdom Conference, Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, Rev. Dr. Elaine Flake, and Rev. Dr. Gina Stewart. About 1,000 women attended the day-long event that included praise and worship, proclamation of the Word, and prayer.

Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, Pastor, The Bronx Christian Church, Bronx, NY challenged W.O.W. attendees to move beyond their circumstance. Preaching from Numbers 27:1-8 on a message entitled, "It's Your Time," she spoke on how the sisters of Zelophehad overcame the challenge of not receiving an inheritance at their father's death. The sisters of Zelophehad, Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah experienced a kiros moment, but they 1) had a strategy, and 2) practiced "the 10 Ups." They respected authority. They went to Moses, the leaders, and to the entire congregation regarding their predicament. Then, they Stood Up, Spoke Up, Let Up, Got Up, Cleaned Up, Fessed Up, Looked Up, Thought Up, Shaped Up, and Listened Up.
-----------
Rev. Cook, a native of New York, is the founder and senior pastor of the Bronx Christian Fellowship, a new church plant for the American Baptist Churches of Metropolitan New York. Prior to this, she served for 13 years as the senior pastor of the Mariners' Temple Baptist Church, the oldest American Baptist Church in New York City where she was the first African-American woman to be elected senior pastor of an American Baptist congregation in its 200-year history.
Motivation and empowerment are the common threads in the diverse work of Rev. Cook. Her efforts to inspire and uplift are demonstrated via sermons, motivational speaking, seminars, and workshops. She leads by example as the first woman officer of the historical 7,500-member Hampton University Ministers' Conference, the largest gathering of African American clergy in the world.

Rev. Cook's most recent endeavors include Sujay Ministries, an exciting and relevant audio and video ministry designed to meet the needs of urban professionals, and youth and Jonco Productions, established to promote her oral, video and written motivational works and concepts. She is also the editor of Judson Press' Wise Women Bearing Gifts and co-author of Preaching in Two Voices (Judson Press, 1995). Her latest release, Sister to Sister: Devotions for and from African American Women, is a best seller and has won her international accalaim (Judson Press, 1996). At the end of 1997, she will release a book on spirituality for women in the work force with Thomas Nelson Publishers.

Do Women Have A Right to Preach?

Rev. Angela Lee Price

For those who still believe women are not called to preach the Word of God, you should know it is empowering to many women that God used a woman, Mary Magdalene to deliver the important message, "He is risen." "Jesus said unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father..." (John 20:17).

Notice what he did not tell her to do, "go and play." The children are frighten by what has happened. Please go and calm them. He didn't say, "go and pray." Some are not going to believe I have risen. You need to pray. He didn't say, "go and lay." You need to go home and lay down. This excitement is too much for a woman. He didn't say, "go and stay." You need to stay out of sight. You're a second-class citizen, and you have a shady past. People might misconstrue your reason for being here so early this Sunday morning.

Now, I know what you are going to say, "Rev. Angela, you can't use that passage to say women are called to preach." Jesus is simply asking her to deliver a message. That's all. If I ask my administrative assistant to deliver a message to my colleagues, does that mean she is called to preach? I don't think so." Well, there may be some merit in what you are saying, but somebody say, "Nevertheless." "Nevertheless!" Nevertheless, this passage empowers women today, and gives them hope for the future.

Here it is, the most important moment in all of biblical history, and a woman is selected, elected, and enlisted for duty. Women today are empowered by (1) Mary's presence and (2) Jesus' enlistment. Mary is present. She is at the right place at the right time, and as the song says, she receives a blessing from the Lord! Mary has walked by faith and not by sight. You need to know that despite all the intellect, reason, and testosterone in the world, without faith it is impossible to please God. Mary is present. And it is her mustard seed-size faith that has moved moutains in the hearts of women today. Women make up 70-80% of most churches today. We are present. Women today have Jesus' back and the Black Church's back. And just as Jesus rewarded Mary Magdelene, we are confident Jesus can and will reward our presence and our faith. Mary Magdelene is present.

Secondly, We see Jesus' enlistment. Jesus has just died on a rugged Cross, and gotten up from a cold, dusty, borrowed grave. And what does he do? He selects, elects, and enlists Mary Magadelene, of all people, the woman once possessed with seven demons. She is the first selected, elected, and enlisted to deliver the message that saved the world, He is risen. He elects her to go and say. Here in John 20, we see that preparation + opportunity = enlistment. You need to know that despite your race, gender, pedigree, or circumstance, God can use you, too, to go and say! The question that begs to be answered is, "Where were the disciples?" He kept telling them what to expect. They walked with Him and talked with Him. He prepared them for three years, and yet not one of them had enough faith to be there when He got up? So, it is Mary Magadelene who is sent to deliver the confirming word of redemption.

One of the preaching women of God in the following documentary states, and I'm paraphrasing - if women can be sent to fight a war in Iraq, surely they can be called to preach the Word of God! And to that I say, "Hallelujah!"

A Woman With A Message From God

By: Minister Angela Lee Price

For those who still believe women are not called to preach the Word of God, you should know it is empowering to many women that God used a woman, Mary Magdalene to deliver the important message, “He is risen.” “Jesus said unto her, "Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father….” (John 20:17- KJV)

Notice what he told her to do, "go and say." Notice what he did not tell her to do, “go and play.” The children are frighten by what has happened. Please go and calm them. He didn’t say, “go and pray.” Some are not going to believe I have risen. You need to pray. He didn’t say “go and lay.” You need to go home and lay down. I need a man to deliver this word. He said "go and say...I ascend to my father."

Finally, notice to whom He instructed her to speak, the brethren. He didn’t send her to women only, a women’s conference, or Women’s Day service, but to the brethren.

Jesus is still giving women important messages today. He is still calling women to preach! Oh, praise God!

Dr. Renita Weems Encourages Women to Keep the Dream Alive

By: Angela Lee Price

Renown preacher, theologian, and author, Rev. Dr. Renita Weems was the keynote speaker at the National Council of Negro Women, Louisville Section's Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast on January 13th at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville. She asked are you "Making A Living Or Building A Legacy?" No doubt, women all over the black community will be joining their churches' Mother Boards after hearing her compelling plea to pass on our rich history and heritage to the youth, particularly young women.

"We get up to make a living, but we hardly think about making a legacy," she opened. "Babies raising babies, that's not wisdom. Everybody wants to stay young, but nobody wants to be on the Mother Board....There is knowledge, wisdom, insight that you are not passing down...knowledge about waiting on God," she told NCNW breakfast attendees. Speaking about young women wearing inappriopriate attire, "hoochie mama" dresses - let's keep it real, Dr. Weems said, "Nobody wants to take authority. Nobody wants to tell them to 'hietch it down'....It is your turn to take the reigns," she told the audience of mostly women, city officials, preachers, and dignitaries. "Reach back for those girls in your church and get on the Mother Board."

Dr. Weems closed the address to a standing ovation. Referring to the unique strength of defiant, unified womenhood she repeated, "When you touch the women you have struck a rock, you have dislodged a boulder, and the devil is going to get crushed!"

As the articles on her website will demonstrate, there is
something within Rev. Dr. Renita Weems that makes her an exceptionally profound preacher, bible expositor, and woman of God.
