Happenings On the Jesus Saves Social Network - February 21st

Water From A Rock
By: Min. Angela Lee Price
Praise the Lord, Everybody! What a powerful Sunday school lesson we had at our church on this weekend! The lesson was entitled, "Water From A Rock," Numbers 20:1-13; 1 Corinthians 10:1-5. This story sheds light on why Moses was not allowed to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
Many people say God was too harsh on Moses in not allowing him to go into the Promised Land. God had specific reasons for why He wanted things done a certain way. Speaking to the Rock who is Jesus Christ is what we should do when we are in need today. We should take all of our problems to the Lord in prayer. I can't imagine swinging at God, pushing or shoving Him to get my way.
It is true the Moses wasn't allowed to go into the Promised Land, but people fail to realize that almost all of the adults, with the exception of Joshua and Caleb, were not allowed to go in either. The people murmured constantly, romanticized their bondage in Egypt, failed to obey God, built the Golden calf, and much more.
This is not to excuse Moses' harsh treatment of the people either. Moses gave the impression that he saved them, that he performed the miracle and not God. Ministry can be difficult and Satan loves to attack us in ways to discredit our witness. This is why we must pray for people in leadership, and how best to present our concerns to them respecting that God has given them authority.
Remember, Jesus Christ is the Living Water. His well never runs dry. In your wilderness experience, don't talk back to Satan or your adversaries. Speak to Jesus about your troubles, and obey His voice. He will see you through!

By: A Debt of Love, Joyce Vaughn
"Oh how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus, because He first loved me," has always been one of my favorite spirituals. I think it sums up Jesus' love for us and ours for Him. Genesis Chapter 1 is about the Creation. What we learn from this is that God chose to create the universe, and the reason for this was because of His love.
Love is often called a debt. In Romans 13:8, it explains that we owe a "continuing debt to love one another. for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law." The reason for love being referred to as a debt is because we are permanently in debt to Jesus for all of His love that He has displayed on us. (click above link to continue)

Three More Winners Announced on Thursday Afternoon!
Win movie passes to see Red Tails:
The thrilling true story of the Tuskegee Airmen buzzes to the big screen in this epic war adventure from executive producer George Lucas and first-time feature director Anthony Hemingway. In the fire and chaos of World War II, the U.S. military recruits a fearless group of African-American fighter pilots to help reclaim the skies over Europe. Discriminated against both as citizens and as soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen take flight in planes distinguished by distinctive red tails, and fight to defeat the tyranny of the Axis powers. As a result of their bravery, the pilots emerge as true heroes, and prove that all men are truly created equal. Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Bryan Cranston star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Win movie passes to see Joyful Noise!
Hard times have fallen on Pacashau, Ga., but the townspeople have faith that the Divinity Church Choir will lift their spirits by winning a national competition. The choir has always made beautiful music, but now, its two leading ladies have hit a sour note. Vi Rose (Queen Latifah) believes that a traditional style is the key to victory, but G.G. (Dolly Parton) thinks tried-and-true means tired-and-old. The two singers must find a harmonious chord or risk losing everything.

WATCH: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Dedicated in DC - BCNN1

President Barack Obama saluted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday as a man who "stirred our conscience" and made the Union "more perfect," rejoicing in the dedication of a monument memorializing the slain civil rights leader's life and work.

"I know we will overcome," Obama proclaimed, standing the 30-foot granite monument to King on the National Mall. "I know this," the president said, "because of the man towering over us."

Obama and his wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, joined a host of civil rights figures for the dedication on the sun-splashed Mall. Designed as what King described as a stone of hope hewn from a mountain of despair, the memorial is the first to a black man on the National Mall and its parks.

"He had faith in us," said Obama, who was 6 when King was assassinated in 1968. Obama told the crowd, "And that is why he belongs on this Mall: Because he saw what we might become."

The dedication has special meaning for the Obamas. The president credits King with paving his way to the White House. Before his remarks, he left signed copies of his inaugural speech and 2008 convention address in a time capsule at the monument site. The first couple and daughters Malia and Sasha made a more private visit to the site on Friday night, before the crowds and the cameras arrived.

In his talk, he focused on King's broad themes - equality, justice and peaceful resistance - as the nation confronts, 48 years later, some of the same issues of war, an economic crisis and a lingering distrust of government in some quarters.

Tavis Smiley Hosts 10th State of the Black Union

Rev. Angela Lee Price

There is still a "Hallelujah" in my spirit. Tavis Smiley's mother has just prayed the benediction at the tenth State of the Black Union Symposium in Los Angeles. I watched half the symposium, and the half, as they say, won't be told by me tonight.

I tuned into C-Span at the beginning of the afternoon session. President Barack Obama's taped video address and the second panel's dialogue has me full to overflowing with new information on a variety of subjects. I truly felt President Obama's address was not only a concise recap of his first 40 days in office, but also a healing moment considering the uproar that occurred over Tavis' comments during the presidential campaign. Eventhough I have spported Tavis in the past and I have spoken with him twice on my radio show, I must admit I was upset with him, too, so I almost didn't watch this 10th Union.

Tavis introduced a new book, Accountable: Making America As Good As Its Promise which outlines President Obama's campaign promises. He asked the audience to use it as a checklist for tracking Obama's progress, plus, as with the 2006 bestseller, Covenent With Black America, Tavis is going on the road to several big cities beginning Monday to discuss the book. Louisville is not on the tour this time, at least not in the first set of cities.

Van Jones, Randall Robinson, Lani Guinier, and Erica Willams all shared profound insights on everything from the president's allocation of federal dollars for global warming and the ecology and the impact those dollars could have on blacks in the 'hood in terms of jobs, to exploring news ways of determining intelligence that includes, and not excludes, the African American intellect, to atrocities in African and other countries during the Clinton era. The first black Republican National Committe Chairman Michael Steele was a panelist as was Julianne Malveaux, Cornel West, Na'im Akbar, Jawanza Kunjufu, Danny Bakewell, Sr., and Karen Bass.

The comment that had me shoutin', however, not there was only one, came from Dr. Emily Towns when she said, "I know many of you are not going to like what I'm about to say, but the black church has to stop focusing so much on prosperity and start focusing on the prophetic (speaking truth to powers, not giving personal prophecies)." She said, "Prosperity is about yourself, your family, and those around you....The prophetic is about each and every one of us. If we don't move more into true communal relationship, Barack Obama will have only one term."

President Barack Obama Inauguration and Speech

"America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words; with hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come; let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Thank you. God bless you.

(APPLAUSE)

And God bless the United States of America."

(APPLAUSE)

Barack Obama Speaks Powerfully On Race and More Perfect Union

How Do You Feel About Barack Obama Now?

In February, Jesus Saves Ministries conducted a poll on the Jesus Saves Ministries Blog asking, "Who Do you Think Will Be the Democratic Choice for President?" The poll results were overwhelmingly in favor of Barack Obama, 70% versus 30%.

Now that Hillary Clinton has won the major states of Texas and Ohio and is back in the race, how do you feel about Barack Obama chances for becoming the nominee? Do you plan to vote in the Indiana or Kentucky primaries? Who do you plan to vote for and why?

Barack Obama Chasing History

Rev. Angela Lee Price

How can we reflect on black history and those who have sacrificed so much for us, even their very lives in the pursuit of justice and equality without stopping to recognize that we are witnessing history in the making? It would be an unjust and unrighteous thing to do in my opinion.

I happened to be watching music mogul Jay-Z, of all people, being interviewed by Charlie Rose one night, and I heard him describe himself as a person "chasing history." He said in effect that he's sold enough albums, gotten enough awards, and has made enough money to last a lifetime. He is strategizing now in such a way as to leave a lasting, history-making impression on this generation and generations to come. He is chasing history.

As I watched Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton debate in Texas last week, I reflected on Senator Obama's recent consecutive string of victories, I had to say that, he too, is chasing history. In fact, I would say that not only is he chasing history, he has caught a piece of it and is becoming history personified before our very eyes. In him is now being made manifest the substance of the prayers of our forefathers and mothers, the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. Here is a classic moment from the Texas Democratic debates.

Barack Obama Speaks At Dr. Martin Luther King's Church

Rev. Angela Lee Price

On Sunday, January 20th, Senator Barack Obama delivered a speech at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Rev. Raphael Warnock is the new pastor of Ebenezer (seated behind Obama). I wrote about him in the related post below, "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'." Be sure to check it out after watching the YouTube clip on Senator Obama's speech.
A quote from the speech:

“For most of this country’s history, we in the African-American community have been at the receiving end of man’s inhumanity to man. And all of us understand intimately the insidious role that race still sometimes plays - on the job, in the schools, in our health care system, and in our criminal justice system.

And yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that none of our hands are entirely clean. If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll acknowledge that our own community has not always been true to King’s vision of a beloved community."
