Pastor Bruce J. Shaw Enjoys "Pleasant" 15th Pastoral Anniversary

It was my honor to serve as mistress of ceremonies at 15th pastoral anniversary banquet on Saturday, July 29th for Rev. Bruce J. Shaw, Pastor, Pleasant View Baptist Church, and his lovely wife First Lady Monica Shaw. What a pleasant night it was. The banquet, “Honoring the Angel of the Church,” was held at the Seelbach Hotel in downtown Louisville.
Guest speaker Councilman David Tandy (below left) spoke on the importance of servant leadership. He jokingly stated he job was to bring everybody back down to earth after a week of powerful preaching. Donnie Morris & his wife Judge Toni Stringer, senior member “Aunt Sally” Mansfield, member Dwight Powell, and Pastor Larry Sykes, Greater Good Hope Baptist Church all acknowledged the Pastor Shaw’s dedication and commitment to ministry for 15 years.
Recently celebrating his tenth pastoral anniversary Pastor Kevin Nelson, First Baptist Church Jeffersontown (photo right) gave invocation opening the banquet, and the Pleasant ViewBaptist Church Ensemble ministered in song. Pastor Shaw’s sons welcomed everyone.
Attendees were blessed to receive gifts throughout the evening in random drawings that included tickets to Holiday World, Kings Island, Wendy’s and Fazoli’s restaurants, movie passes, and Bath & Body Works gift sets.

After the banquet, the Pleasant View Church family and friends danced the night away to the sounds of GrooveMasters featuring Curtis Gaines and Maestro J.
Pastor Shaw's anniversary was punctuated by a powerful week of preaching beginning Wednesday, July 25th through Sunday, July 29th including Pastor Derrick Miles, Greater Friendship Baptist Church; Pastor Anthony Middleton, Cable Baptist Church; Pastor Walter Malone, Canaan Christian Church; Pastor Darryl Nathan, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and Pastor C. Mackie Daniels, West Chestnut Baptist Church.
Rev. C. Mackie Daniels, Pastor of West Chestnut Street Baptist Church spoke on Sunday at the 11:00 service. His sermon, "Having Reason to Stand" was based on Amos 7, and Acts 5. Rev. Daniels stated that the glory of ministry is to declare the Good News and herald the arrival of the King. The preacher's duty is to announce the arrival of the King. Quoting Amos 7:15, Daniels said "The Lord took me..."is a compelling reason to stand. Amos assured Amaziah he was not at Bethel by his own choosing, nor would he be coming with a message to proclaim. The Lord took me and told me to go prophesy to the people of Israel. Daniels stated, "There will be those with vested interest in challenging your reason to stand... Preacher and people need to be reminded that when the Lord takes a messenger, He places them where He chooses... We cannot tailor God's message to fit the desires of you."
Three Reasons to Stand:
1. The Lord took me.
2. There are spiritually hungry people and preachers must possess a compassionate concern for others. Jesus is the example. He said, "I am the Good Shepherd...." Preachers fail the people with the likeness of pretty words. The people in the pews have special needs....
3. There is no substitute for the message and the God-called messenger. The Lord called, sent, and told me what to say. Only the God-sent preacher has the words of eternal life.

Praise Walkers Take to Street for Jesus at Summerfest 2012

Pastors, ministers, praise and worship leaders, prayer warriors, Sunday school classes and number of churches and ministries took to the streets in Christian t-shirts on Saturday, June 23rd to praise God, and pray for West Louisville in response to recent gun violence.  Approximately 250 walkers participated in this three-mile 5k walk/run around Chickasaw Park that started at 8:00 a.m. with pre-walk praise and worship. The walk, the kick-off to Saturday Summerfest 2012 activities got underway at 9:00 a.m. The theme was "We walk by faith and not by sight." 2 Corin. 5:7.
Jesus Saves Ministries, Inc. founder Min. Angela Lee Price, the walk coordinator gave the call to action, Rev. Patricia Wright, Prayer Ministry Director, St. Stephen Church, offered prayer, and Pastor David Snardon, Joshua Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church spoke to group from Word of God. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Police Chief Steve Conrad, and WLOU/Praize 104.7 General Manager Bill Price all gave remarks. DeWalt "Coach Mo"  Mozziz, of Biggest Loser television show lead walkers in stretching exercises during pre-walk worship and warm-up. The gospel group Robert Jamison and Victory lead walkers in singing praise songs, and Rodney Cross of the Neil Huffman Auto Group drove pace car on first two laps. The walk consisted of three one-mile laps around Chickasaw Park in West Louisville and along Southwestern Parkway. Walkers sang songs of praise on the first lap, prayed on the second lap, and challenged themselves to "finish the race" for Christ and reach their purpose on the third lap.  "We thank our sponsors, volunteers and supporters for sharing the vision for Praise Walk 3.0.  We couldn't have done it without them.  When the saints go marching in, get off the seats and take to the streets in unity, with prayer and praise as our weapon, the enemy will be defeated.  We were overjoyed to many people running on the last leg of the walk.  Another Angela once said, and it bears repeating you can't reach your purpose if you can't reach your toes," stated Min. Angela.
Praise Walk 3.0 kicked-off Summerfest 2012, a day-long festival in Chickasaw Park which drew national gospel recording artists, Ernest Pugh, Myron Butler, Issac Simpson, Jason Clayborn, and Chad Higgins & In Spirit and In Truth.  Summerfest organizers also hosted The Praying for Peace Community Prayer Breakfast on Friday morning.

The prayer and praise walk was broadcast in part live on WLOU Radio between 9:00-9:30 on the Single Mothers Let's Talk Radio Show. Members from the Jesus Saves Social Network and Min. Price's Sunday school class Learning About Jesus distributed hand towels, water, and assisted with registration. The Neil Huffman Auto Group and Hope Blackmon and the Single Mothers Let's Talk Radio Show donated approximately 200 water bottles in all to the event.
A $250.00 donation will go to the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy, also known as the West Louisville Boys and Girls Choir, an organization serving at-risk youth and young adults with mentoring and arts in West Louisville. Rev. Cory Brooks, Chicago's "Rooftop Pastor", Plans to Walk 3,000 Miles To Fight Violence In City - BCNN1

Rev. Cory Brooks, known around Chicago as the "Rooftop Pastor," says his battle against urban violence is akin to the epic struggle between David and Goliath.

His "New Beginnings Church" is located in arguably America's most dangerous city for young teens who have been dying from gun violence almost weekly.

On Tuesday, Brooks plans to start his 3,000-mile walk from New York to Los Angeles to raise funds for a community center in the Chicago neighborhood of Woodlawn and draw attention to his city's issues with youth violence, The Chicago Tribune reports. His two sons Desmond Marshall, 22, and Cobe, 11, will join him on the journey.

"It will bring attention to this major epidemic," Marshall told The Tribune.

David Birch To All The Mothers In My Life

David Birch, St. Stephen Church
This penning was inspired by my two sisters from another mother whose mother recently went home and who have chilrun who are away...

To all the mothers in my life, both needed and true!
To all the mothers in my life, this salute is for you.
You were there when you really didn’t always have the desire,
Many times to damper or put out our real or perceived fires.
You were there to correct, protect or project special things within our minds.
Things sometimes thought not relative for the times.
Though all have not birthed me, I value each one of you.
On this special day, you deserve things reserved especially for you.
Some of you may be sisters, cousins, related or not;
This day I ask God to give His best like it or not you’re the crème of the crop.
Some of you are hurting, missing those not so near;
With thoughts of them lingering ever so dear
Just know you’ll see them some sweet day be it here or on the other side;
Until then keep pleasant thoughts of those you love planted deeply in your mind.
To all the mothers in my life, all needed and true!
Today I salute you for you are a gift from God, ever so true!

Lovingly penned by DJ Birch

My Two Cents On Same-Sex Marriage (For What It's Worth)

President Obama came out of the closet, so to speak, on same-sex marriage. While I support him as President, I disagree with the president in this instance. Let me state further, that while I have voted in all presidential elections of late, there has not been one candidate for whom I have I voted that I have agreed with on all important theological issues, including President Obama. That being said, I believe President Obama has done an admirable job, all things considered. So, here are my two cents, for what its worth, on same-sex marriage:

Marriage, divorce, homosexuality, procreation, contraception, reproductive technologies can be examined within the same theological framework, and that is by examining what God has to say about marriage. The foundational command of Scripture is for a man and woman to be fruitful and multiply within the confines of marriage. Genesis 1:27-28 states, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” God hates divorce. Matthew 19:6 states, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” “Fruitfulness,” or natural reproduction is only possible in a male and female union (1 Corinthians 7:2-4).

Marriage is a God-ordained institution with strong biblical basis and is subject to civil, moral, and spiritual laws. Nowhere does the Bible affirm same sex relationships or marriage. Both the old and new testaments affirm procreation as a main purpose for marriage. God commanded Noah and his sons to be “fruitful and multiply (Gen. 9:1)” and promised “fruitfulness” to Abraham (Gen. 12:2; 13:16; 15:5), Isaac (Gen. 26:4, 24), and Jacob (Gen. 28:14; 35:11).

There is no place in the bible where God remotely suggests that two people of the same sex should have sex or marry. I stand by what God has to say about the matter. What say you?

Praise Your Way Through!

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
The psalmist asked, “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? (Psalms 137:4). The people of Israel were exiled in a strange land, Babylon. The Babylonians "clowned" them and used them for entertainment saying, "sing us one of the songs of Zion. (v3)".

Despite their circumstance, the Israelites turned their strange situation, their strange land into a sanctuary of praise and worship, "If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. (vs 5-7)". They remembered their rich past and the goodness of the Lord, "O, daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.... (v8)."
No matter what you are going through. No matter how strange your land, circumstance, or situation this summer, don't forget Jesus Christ. Don't forget where you came from. Don't forget the goodness of the Lord. He brought our ancestors through slavery. He protected them from dangers seen and unseen. He brought you a mighty long way.
When you think, you will thank. Think on His bountiful blessings. Count them one by one. Then, lift up your voice and give thanks unto the Lord for He is good and his mercies endure forever!
Remember, it is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!

Bill Price Shares "No Excuse Day" Testimony at Kenwood Church

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
"They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony, for they did not love their lives in the face of death (Rev. 12:11 NIV)."

My husband, Bill Price is a well-known and well-liked radio personality in Louisville.  He has worn a number of hats in radio over 40 years.  Currently, he is the General Manager of PraisePower 1350 WLOU and the new Praise 104.7 FM.  The station went FM in December 2011 and won a 2012 Stellar Award for Mid-Market Radio Station of the Year.

Bill and I were invited to be apart of  "No Excuse Day" at Kenwood Northeast Missionary Baptist Church, Crestwood, Kentucky.  I brought the morning message, "Just Keep On Coming to Church" based on Acts 3:1-10 and the lame man at the Gate called Beautiful.  Churches are packed all over the nation on Easter, but the following weeks, many people have countless lame excuses for why they can't come to church.

Bill shared a testimony about how a stroke in 2008 brought him closer to the Lord. He talked about how over the years he has made countless excuses for not going  to church. If it was raining, he wouldn't go. If he didn't have the right suit, he wouldn't go. If his favorite team was playing that day, he wouldn't go. He confessed he is the king of a million and one excuses for not going to church.  He admitted God has done a mighty work in him and he is more grateful for God's grace and mercy in his life. Bill's testimony was so powerful. Everyone praised the Lord.  We saw ourselves in what Bill had to say.  Bill is not what he ought to be, but thank God, he is not what he use to be either. Oh, what a change God has made in his life! And the testimony that God has given him, not only encouraged us on "No Excuse Day," but has encouraged other groups over the past three years.
Bill and I attended the 24th First Family Anniversary Celebration on August 7, 2011 of Rev. James Booker, Jr., Pastor, Kenwwod Northeast Missionary Baptist Church, Crestwood, KY. Rev. Booker is the April 2012 Pastor of the Month on PraisePower `1350 WLOU and the new Praize 1047.
If you are "going through" a trial, sickness, or crisis right now, could it be that it is only a test?  Jesus, the Lamb, did His part in overcoming the enemy by shedding his blood at Calvary and dying for our sins. The "and" in Revelations 12:11 states we must do our part, too.    We must share our testimonies. As a matter of fact, you ought to do, as the songwriter says, and praise Him in the middle of it.

There is no testimony without a test. God's testing strengthens our faith and our relationship with Him. God's testing builds character. The good thing is if we fail His test, He allows us take it over. Philippians 1:6 states, "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."  God uses all things to accomplish his will in making us like Jesus Christ.  Romans 8:38 states, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called called according to his purpose."    There is no testimony without a test.  It's only a test!

Sermon Highlights: Their Eyes Were Watching God

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
Dr. Marcus Cosby is an absolute beast! Everybody who knows me know I loves me some Marcus Cosby, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Houston, Texas...."and the Bible says!...." He makes me hollar back everytime, "What does the Bible say, preacher!" He is the perfect speaker for Bates' Bible Institute happening April 16-18th, at Bates Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville, KY.
His message last night was "Their Eyes Were Watching God" base on the book title by Zora Neale Hurston. His text was 2 Chronicles 20:12, "...We don't know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."

King Jehoshaphat was King of Judah. He was wise and did what was right in the sight of God. Everything went well for him in chapters 17, 18, & 19. They were livin' life like it was golden. But in Chapter 20, the text starts, "After this" All hell breaks loose. Three enemies came against Judah to make war all at the same time.

King Jehoshaphat inquired of God. The people fasted and prayed (v 3-4). Then the King stood up before all the people and prayed, and at the end of the prayer he confesses, "We don't know whatto do, but our eyes are upon you (My emphasis added)."
They kept their eyes on God based on
  1. God's past participation (v 6-ff)
  2. God's present partnership (v. 13)
  3. God's pending promises
    1. I will be with you (v 17)
    2. I will uphold you (v 20)
    3. You will be successful (v 20)
Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel, a guest upon the group. He said, "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, it's God's (v 15). You will not have to fight the battle. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord! The king fell down and worshipped and everybody did what he did, they fell down and worshipped too.
When you get in situations where you just don't know what to do, keep your eyes on God. Fast, pray, and seek His face. Do what the King and the people did, worship God.

My Comments:
The text says beginning at verse 21, "After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: "Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever."

Herein is the rest of the story...Praise defeated the enemy! God loves it when you fast, pray, and seek His face, and He loves it when you praise Him. Jehoshaphat takes the people's advice and he orders men to sing to the Lord. When they do that, God set ambushes against the three nations and they turn on each other, and destroy each other!

This is almost identical to what happened in the war Gideon's army did not have to fight (Judges 7). God sent 300 men against a vast army of 30,000 Midianites. God confused the enemy with trumpets, torches, and timing! The army prepared for war, processed to the battlefield, and positioned themselves, but they did not fight! And God got the glory! When praises go up, blessings come down!

You Can Find the Bodies of Mohammed, Buddha, and Confucius, But You Cannot Find the Body of Jesus Christ - BCNN1

By: Daniel Whyte, III
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Matthew 28:6, "He [Jesus] is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

One of the most famous Buddhist temples in the world is the Shwe Dagon. It stands on a hill over 200 feet high and rises some 200 feet higher. It is covered with a pure gold leaf. Around its base are hundreds of small pagodas, in each of which is some relic of a teacher of Buddhism. Embedded in the solid masonry of the base is a gold box which contains some finger-bones, teeth, and other parts of Buddha, who lived many centuries ago.

There is another burial place in Arabia, the green mosque of Medina, under which lies the body of Mohammed. Millions of people today are his earnest followers. But, despite his greatness, he, too, is dead, and like Buddha, he lies buried here on earth.

The burial place of Confucius is a grass covered mound in the province of Shantung, China. Confucius was also a great man and teacher, and he influenced the lives of millions of human beings. Nevertheless, he is dead and his body, too, is here on earth.

There is another tomb that was cut into a rock. A tomb which had been closed with a great stone. Today, the stone is "rolled away", and the Man whose body had been laid within by sorrowing friends is gone.
The world shattering truth being that on the third day, "He [Jesus] ROSE from the dead!"

Yes, indeed, the tomb of Christ is an empty tomb. That's the vital difference between Jesus of Nazareth and any and all other great religious leaders who ever walked the earth.

He, too, was a great teacher. He, too, was a great man. His teaching also has affected millions who believe in Him. But He was much more than a great teacher or philosopher, more than just a great leader. He is the Son of God with power. That's why His tomb is empty! Acts 2:24 says, "[Jesus] Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it." (Click link to read more)
