Those Preachin' Women: Abigail, A Woman of Wisdom

Rev. Lesa Dae, Pastor of Women and Director of Evangelism, St. Stephen Church, Louisville was one of three preachers preaching on Abigail and wisdom last night at the third annual Those Preachin' Women Conference at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church, 428 E. Breckinridge St., Louisville, Kentucky. Her sermon was entitled, Abigail: A Woman of Wisdom, from 1 Samuel 25:2-3.

Those Preachin' Women continues nightly this week with worshops, worship services featuring some of this region's most gifted preaching women, and concludes with a scholarship banquet on Friday, July 17th.

Stop Going to Church and Be the Church!

Myrlene L. J. Hamilton admonishes Christians in the opening chapter of the book, Being The Body of Christ: A Handbook for Mobilizing Your Congregation to stop going to church and be the church! “Something is wrong when Christians can be content to ‘go to church’ when in Christ we are called to be the church. Somehow, in the passing of hundreds of years of Christian history, Christians have come to treat the church as a place to go rather than as a people we are called to be,” she states on page one of the book. In order to be the church, Christians have to stop mindlessly consuming and begin to start putting into practice what they have learned in the pews, and move into ministry.

Once we have heard God’s ‘voice in the night’ and think we are ready to respond, it’s wise, she says on pages 14-15 of the book, to ask ourselves some questions.

Does it fit within God’s kingdom priorities? God seems to have a call penchant for justice, for fair treatment of the poor and oppressed. Will pursuing this call serve to help people, or is it really an ego trip for me? Will it bring people closer to Christ, to experience their own ‘transforming moment’?

Is it safe? Does it involve a journey? Most people like activities that are safe, but God’s call is not always safe. In fact, it usually involves a journey that has a fair amount of risks….Going to church is safe. Answering God’s call is not. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Where is my heart? More than likely, a genuine call will involve some amount of passion, which simply means that God has touched our heart in such a way that we can virtually give our lives to this work. Speaking along similar lines, Frederick Beachner says that ‘the place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.’15 _____________________________________________________________________________________
Does this call lead me to use my gifts in ministry? If we have heard a genuine call from God, and if we are willing for God to transform us, then the call will lead us to ministry. In the exercise of that ministry we will discover that God has given us special tools with which to do the task. In Romans 12, when Paul challenges us to be transformed, he moves directly into a discussion of spiritual gifts, which are tools for ministry. If we do not find ourselves using our special tools in service to the church and to the world, we may need to reexamine that sense of call. _____________________________________________________________________________________
Myrlene Hamilton concludes the first chapter, "Stop Going to Church," by stating:

When we are walking in the direction that God is leading us, we can walk with confidence, knowing that the One ‘who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion’ (Philippians 1:6 NIV). We may sometimes fail, sometimes hear incorrectly, but God is always faithful to accomplish God’s will in us and through us.

I believe that God is calling Christians to this depth of commitment: to allow ourselves to be transformed in such a way that we will enter into ministry, our Christian vocation. As we allow God to transform us, we will be receptive to God’s call, and we will find that we have stopped going to church-because we are the church!

"Wisdom, Warfare, and Worship," the Theme of This Year's Those Preachin Women

Under the theme, "Wisdom, Warfare, and Worship," those preaching women take to the pulpit July 14th-17th at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church, Louisville, Kentucky for four dynamic nights of preaching and teaching. Those Preachin' Women, in its third year, has become the premiere gathering of Christian women featuring some of this region's most gifted preaching women.

Rev. Kathy Ogletree Goodwin, Pastor, Coke Memorial United Methodist Church (photo left), and host of this event states, "This event provides an opportunity for women who are called by God, to the ministry of 'Word', to share their preaching gift. This event also provides an opportunity for women to be exposed to and network with other women who share in the 'passion' of preaching the Word of God. This event is about the diversity of preaching and is not a preaching competition. It expresses the greatness of our God and reveals how our great God can and will use all who avail themselves to God. It also exposes women to the riches of the Scriptures as seen through someone else's eyes."

The Kings Pay Tribute to the King of Pop

This was one of the moments I enjoyed best in watching the Michael Jackson Memorial. The Kings, Martin Luther King, III's and his sister Bernice King's speeches richly represented the King of Kings and the King family legacy. There were some very poignant moments throughout the memorial service, but I guess for me it was about seeing how the one true King would be represented, talked about, and/or mentioned. I loved Lionel Ritchie's "Jesus Is Love." Barbara Jackson Lee's comments about the Good Samaritan were good. Pastor Lucius Smith made powerful statements during his prayer and benediction to the effect that Michael Jackson's knee, and every knee, for that matter, would one day bow to the King of Kings. How true! How true!

Remember, it is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!

I want to thank God first for restoring my right to vote. When I received the certificate in the mail the week of June 22nd, my wife Tiffany and I were estastic. She didn't know how to act. I have four sons, five daughters, and nephews whom I am trying to inspire and keep from making the bad choice I made as a youth. I am trying to be a positive figure for my family and friends.

Secondly, I want to thank my brother for bringing me to St. Stephen Church. Since he brought me 10 years ago, my life has changed. Before then, I was in the streets hustling. Hearing Rev. Cosby preach has inspired me to do the right thing. One of my sons and a daughter have been baptized, and I have met good friends through Sunday school.

Tyrone Trumbo, Sr. with his 7-year-0ld son, Montre at Wednesday Night Bible Study on July 1st. Tryone signs Montre into children's Bible study class.

A friend who had his rights restored last year, Carlton Gibson told me about Rev. Angela and this advocacy program for former felons. It means the world to me to have my rights restored. It makes me feel like I have proven something to myself, my family, my community, and to God, that I am headed in the right direction.

Min. Angela congratulates Tyrone for having civil rights restored, the right to vote and hold public office.
