Red Heart Luncheon Promotes Heart Health

By:  Min. Angela Lee Price

DIVAS for Christ (DIVAS stands for Divinely Inspired Virtuous & Victoriously Anointed Sisters) hosted their first annual Red Heart Luncheon and Self Care Fair on Saturday, February 23rd at Hotel Louisville in support of American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign.

Virginia Bradford, registered nurse with the KYANNA Black Nurses Association was the expert speaker. A registered nurse and healthcare advocate, she has been in the community raising awareness of health disparities in the African American community for many years. She reminded everyone to do basic things to prevent heart disease, know their numbers, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI, and to get regular blood presssure checks and annual screenings.

Three panelists, Ann Kitchens (Zion Baptist Church), Benetta Hawkins (JCPS teacher), and Barbara Smith (St. Stephen Church) shared their stories of triumph with heart disease. Barbara Smith, in the cream blouse, is the Prayer Coordinator for my Sunday school class, Learning About Jesus.  She talked about the role stress played in her illness.  She habitually put the needs of family members and others before her own. Here, as we presented gift baskets to all four speakers, I am commenting on God's presence in the midst of her trial. Last month, she learned of having a heart attack upon arriving at the hospital for a unrelated scheduleded procedure. She had heart surgery that day, received a pacemaker and was in Sts. Mary's and Elizabeth Hospital for two weeks. Wasn't God good to have placed at the hospital right when she needed to be there!

Ann Kitchens reminded everyone not to overlook heart disease in their family history.  She began to get tired and short of breath after walking short distances, but delayed seeing the doctor.  Although two relatives died of heart attacks, she attributed her symptoms to just needing to lose weight.  Benetta Hawkins, seated on the far end, spoke of discovering she had heart problems after giving birth. Heart disease is no respector of age as it is the number one killer of women in the United States.

Attendees received free health screenings, and health assessments by Norton's Healthcare. Vendors from Saba ACE, Ardyss, A&B Fashion Jewelry, Symmetry, Smart Electronics Zone, and Jesus Saves Ministries shared information about their products. I brought along Christ-centered custom-made gift baskets. These baskets make great conference gifts for speakers, door prizes, birthday gifts, or comfort and care gifts for the sick-n-shut-in, members in hospital, and nursing home.

Founded by Rev. Altonnette Hawkins, Pastor, Shawnee Christian Church, DIVAS for Christ Ministries is an interdenominational Christian sisterhood that focuses on self-care awareness and support, promotes nurturing and supportive siter-to-sister relationships, celebrates the gifts and talents to build and edify the Body of Christ in churches, communities, and in the world through worship, mission and  community outreach.  For additional information, log onto divasforchrist.org

The Season of Lent, Prayer and Repentance

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
Wednesday, February 13th began the Lenten season. In Western Christianity, Lent is 40 days of fasting and repentance in preparation for Resurrection Sunday (Easter), this year on Sunday, March 31st. The six Sundays in Lent are not counted among the 40 days of lent as each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter," a celebration of Jesus' victory over sin and death.
Beginning February 13th and for each Wednesday through Wednesday, March 27th, join the Jesus Saves Network for our 12-hour fast from 6A-6P or 6P-6A (if you work overnight). It is a time not just to "get your ashes," and "give up something," but more importantly, a time to go to the Lord in prayer and Scripture meditation. If Wednesday is not a good day for you, choose a day on which you feel you will be able to fast consistently during the Lenten season. If, for medical reasons, you cannot participate in a full or partial food fast, then consider giving up something very important to you for 12 hours on Wednesdays, (junk food and sweets, shopping, cell phone, computer, television, text messaging, caffeine, etc.) and give that time to the Lord in prayer and Scripture meditation. If Wednesday is not a good day for you, choose a day on which you feel you will be able to fast consistently during the Lenten season.
Please post your first name at the bottom of this post if you plan to participate so that we can encourage each other along the way. Let us pray that the Lord's will is done in our homes, churches, schools, communities, that souls are saved, and people are healed, delivered, sanctified, and strengthened in their ministries and in their walk with the Lord.
Read Esther 4:15-17, 2 Chron. 20:3-30, Neh. 9:1-37, Matt 4:1-4, Luke 2:37, Acts 13:2-3, and all passages on fasting & prayer. It is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!

What Is Lent and Why Should We Care?

I see on t.v. that Lent is here! What exactly is it? I've been asking. Is it a day to pick the lent off all your sweaters to stretch your wardrobe? It is a day to clean out your dryer vents because they are dirty, stuffed with lent? What is Lent and why should we care?

Lent is about ashes. This I know and why is that? I saw on television the other night a news story about people whose homes became fire hazards because they didn't realize their dyers and the electrical outlets were covered, filled with lent. They showed how quickly lent-filled dryers went up in flames due to all that lent, verses how slowly clean dryers burned. Talk about ashes!! Wow! I hope nobody burns! I just sayin'  I know! I know! I'm sounding a little facetious. Sorry....just need to know what it means.  Forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me, please!

I have no intention on belittling this Lent! It just seems a whole lot of people don't know what it is, what to do with it, or why they should care. I have asked. But, they are too busy to give it a second thought. Maybe that's why all that lent builds up in their dryers, making them dirty inside...I just sayin'! Please, forgive me! Forgive me, please!  I just need to know what it means.  I just sayin'!

Lent is about "giving up something." This I know and why is that? If I give it up, will I get it back? Is it like "donating," or something like that? I am trying with exaggeration and on purpose to get your attention in hopes you might say something, educate me, please about what this Lent is and what it really means! I am young, and new to all this, but I see it on t.v. and it peaked my interest.  Exactly, then, what does Lent mean to you and what should Lent mean to me? I am young and why should we care? Hello? Hello? Is anybody there?

Remember, it is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus Saves!

This is only the second time the award has been given. Tony Dungy was the previous winner.

More Experience New Beginning Through Jesus Saves Ex-Offender Advocacy Initiative

By: Min. Angela Lee Price
St. Stephen Church staffer Vicki Todd, along with three other applicants, regained her rights to vote and hold public office, receiving a packet from Governor Steve Beshear's office in January through the Jesus Saves Ministries Ex-Offender Advocacy Initiative in association with St. Stephen Church. In all, 37 people have regained their voting rights and many others are experiencing a new beginning as they have gotten on the road to criminal record expungement through this initiative. Vicki posted on our Facebook page, "Rev. Angela, I just wanted to let you know that I received my certificate in the mail granting me my voting rights. I want to thank you because if not for you I wouldn't have thought twice about it. This is a great start to 2013. GOD has been so good to me. I want to thank you for being and example in my life to follow. I love you, Rev. Angela, and GOD BLESS YOU for just being you. Keep doing what your doing." I told her over the phone and on Facebook how proud we are of her accomplishments to which she replied on January 22nd, "Thanks, Rev. Angela. Like I said if it had not been for GOD and you, and few others here at St. Stephen, I wouldn't be where I am today. Iv'e tried to follow the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Vicki is a recovering drug addict who will celebrate five years of sobriety on February 11th. In 2008, she accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and was baptized. Concurrently, God granted her part-time employment at the church in Environmental Services, which has since been upgraded to full-time status with benefits. Vicki now serves as Supervisor of the St. Stephen Family Life Center Front Desk and Assistant to Christine Cosby, Director of the Family Life Center. "God has changed my life. It is 110 percent better than it was. If God doesn't do another thing, He has already done enough," Todd stated. (Photo: Vicki with St.Stephen member and Simmons College of Kentucky staffer Sharon Crawford at St. Stephen Black and White Ball in 2011).
We share these stories so that you can see the power of God at work in the lives of women and men like Vicki Todd, Brandon Gamboa, and Larry George (here with me, and Archia Kinnard after a radio interview with me on December 20th).  They are not sitting on the premises but standing on the promises of God. This initiative is available to anyone in the state of Kentucky in need of these services. Other testimonies can be found under the Blogs section of the Jesus Saves Social Network and on the Jesus Saves Ministries Blog. For more information, about District Court expungements, including misdemeanors and traffic violations, call Archia Kinnard, 502-595-3071. For more information on restoration of voting rights, or if you'd to schedule a workshop or seminar at your church, call me, Min. Angela Lee Price, 502-415-1001.
