Mother to Son: Life Still Ain't No Crystal Stair
Proverbs 1: 7-9 (KJV)
(V7) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
(V8) My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
(V9) For they shall an ornament of grace unto thy head and chains about thy
neck.”
The poem, Mother to Son by Harlem Renaissance poet, Langston Hughes is a classic and popular letter of counsel and encouragement. In it, a mother passionately admonishes her son to stay life’s challenging course as life for her “ain’t been no crystal stair.” Today, life still is no “crystal stair.” How we wisely handle life’s tacks, splinters, bare places - “places with no carpet on the floor,” is what the book of Proverbs is all about.Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and fools despise wisdom and instruction.” The Original African Heritage Study Bible explains this passage stating, “To the African/Edenic Hebrew the fear (respect) of God is the first step in worshiping the God of Israel,” and “When African people consider God to be omniscient, they are at the same time conferring upon Him the highest possible position of honor and respect, for wisdom commands great respect in African societies.”
In Hughes’ poem, the mother tells her son, “Don’t you set down on the steps ‘cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now - for I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Does the son respect the Lord and welcome his mother’s wisdom, or does he disrespect the Lord and reject her counsel? We have no way of knowing, for the poet does not provide answers to those questions. The Lord does, however, provide answers in the Bible to all questions. He makes it clear through Solomon in Proverbs Chapter 1 that following the godly instruction and teaching of father and mother will yield positive results, “an ornament of grace unto thy head and chains about thy neck. (v9)”
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor – bare.
But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on,
and reachin’ landin’s, and turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you sit down on the steps ‘cause you find it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now –
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me
ain’t been no crystal stair.

Finish the Race In Giving!
- Give in proportion to what you have. In fact, Paul says this twice in verses 11 and 12. Then in verse 12, he adds "give in proportion to what you have, not what you don't have." This is such a liberating statement. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty if you can't give $500, $1,000, $10,000 or some gigantic amount you don't have.
- Give eagerly. He says, "Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly (v12a)." Acceptable gifts are contributions given in the right spirit. We should not fall into the trap of "giving to get," out of peer pressure. We should give because God has so graciously and generously given to us. We should give hilariously, joyfully - not out of mere duty or guilt (2 Corinthians 9:7-15).

Prayer, A New Twist on High Five Day!
"And He said to them, 'Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing set before him'; and he will answer from within and say, 'Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in the bed; I cannot rise and give to you'? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs. So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you"' Luke 11:9 NKJV.Sunday, April 17, 2016
Make His Praise Glorious!
"Shout with joy to God, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious! Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you. All the earth bows down to you. They sing praise to you. They sing praise to your name. Selah. Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man's behalf!" Psalm 66:1-5.
Gospel artist Martha Munizzi has a song entitled, "Glorious." We play it on the radio. When you hear this upbeat song, you can't help but to praise God because a reoccuring line in the song states, "I was created to make Your praise glorious!" The song reminds us that our top priority on the job, at lunch, and throughout the day is to put God first and give Him glorious praise in thought and in deed.
Psalm 66 is a great foundational and complementary text to Martha Munizzi's song, "Glorious." The psalmist reminds us we are here to give God glorious praise! When we think about how awesome God is, we should become thankful for His goodness towards us. He's the uncaused Cause who causes everything to exist; He's the God who causes our solar systerm, the galaxies, and the universe to hang in the heavens; He's the God who delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage and into the Promise Land; and He's the God who was so mindful of tiny, insignificant humanity that He gave His only Son to die for our sins! When we think about all this, how awesome (terrible) is our God, we should want to make our praise glorious!
To make His praise glorious we should 1) "Shout with joy to God (v1); 2) Sing the glory of his name (v2); 3) Say to Him (in prayer) (v3); and 4) Come and see what He has done (v5)!
This week, make His praise glorious! Shout, sing, say, and invite the unchurched and dechurched to come and see our awesome God! He is worthy to be praised!
