A Move of the Holy Spirit

I love it when God opens the eyes of my understanding to see what was there all along!  Oh, to see as God sees!  Oh, to have a revelation, and be able to share it with others!  It makes my heart happy, and my toes tingle!  That is why regular Bible study is so important.   People who go to church  for worship alone don't grow as they could or should.  Your Bible should have underlined words, highlighted sentences, and dog-eared pages.  There should be dried tear-stained passages where the word of God has gripped your heart.  There should be circles, marks, and squiggle lines in the margins where you have mediated and pondered the meaning of the text and its significance in your life. We thank God for His Word, His Son, and the Holy Spirit. We are praying for the manifest presence of God in our lives, a move of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the people of God to study the word of God, serve God, and witness to a dying world!  Jesus saves!

Mother to Son: Life Still Ain't No Crystal Stair

By:  Angela Lee Price
Proverbs 1: 7-9 (KJV)
(V7) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
(V8) My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
(V9) For they shall an ornament of grace unto thy head and chains about thy
neck.”

The poem, Mother to Son by Harlem Renaissance poet, Langston Hughes is a classic and popular letter of counsel and encouragement. In it, a mother passionately admonishes her son to stay life’s challenging course as life for her “ain’t been no crystal stair.” Today, life still is no “crystal stair.” How we wisely handle life’s tacks, splinters, bare places - “places with no carpet on the floor,” is what the book of Proverbs is all about.

Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and fools despise wisdom and instruction.” The Original African Heritage Study Bible explains this passage stating, “To the African/Edenic Hebrew the fear (respect) of God is the first step in worshiping the God of Israel,” and “When African people consider God to be omniscient, they are at the same time conferring upon Him the highest possible position of honor and respect, for wisdom commands great respect in African societies.”

In Hughes’ poem, the mother tells her son, “Don’t you set down on the steps ‘cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now - for I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Does the son respect the Lord and welcome his mother’s wisdom, or does he disrespect the Lord and reject her counsel? We have no way of knowing, for the poet does not provide answers to those questions. The Lord does, however, provide answers in the Bible to all questions. He makes it clear through Solomon in Proverbs Chapter 1 that following the godly instruction and teaching of father and mother will yield positive results, “an ornament of grace unto thy head and chains about thy neck. (v9)”

Mother To Son, by Langston Hughes
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor – bare.
But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on,
and reachin’ landin’s, and turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you sit down on the steps ‘cause you find it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now –
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me
ain’t been no crystal stair.

Finish the Race In Giving!

The Kentucky Derby Festival is in full swing here in Louisville, Kentucky, culminating on Saturday, May 7th in the crème de la crème of horse races, the 142nd "Run for the Roses," the fastest two minutes in sports. Horse racing enthusiasts, celebrities, and guests from all over the world will be opening their wallets and checkbooks for all sorts of reasons, from philanthropy to the frivolous. You can bet on that.  You can tell what a person loves or values by taking a good look at their checkbook. Hopefully, more checks will be written to underwrite West Louisville ministries supporting the least of these.   As the saying goes, where your heart is, your treasure is also.
In 2 Corinthians 8, the apostle Paul took a look at the  contribution statements of the Corinthian church, and he was none too happy.   Paul admonished the churches to show proof of their love by finishing what they started in their giving the previous year (v10a).  He put the Corinthian churches on notice, comparing their giving with that of the Macedonian churches, "They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor.  But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity" (v2).
The Corinthians had gotten off to a great start the previous year and they led all the other churches.  Apparently, something happened over the months, and though their gifts excelled in other areas of ministry, their financial gifts had fallen behind (v7).  Paul stated, "Since you excel in so many ways--in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us--I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving." Paul reminded the church that the previous year they were the first to want to give, and the first church to begin giving (v10b).  He wanted them to get back in the race and finish the race in giving.

Here are two important statements from chapters 8 & 9 that can help us finish the race in our giving:   We should remember to...
  1. Give in proportion to what you have.  In fact, Paul says this twice in verses 11 and 12.  Then in verse 12, he adds "give in proportion to what you have, not what you don't have."  This is such a liberating statement.  Don't let anyone make you feel guilty if you can't give $500, $1,000, $10,000 or some gigantic amount you don't have.
  2.  Give eagerly.  He says, "Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly (v12a)."   Acceptable gifts are contributions given in the right spirit. We should not fall into the trap of "giving to get," out of peer pressure.  We should give because God has so graciously and generously given to us.  We should give hilariously, joyfully - not out of mere duty or guilt (2 Corinthians 9:7-15).
At the race track the focus and priority is on winning and receiving. Everyone thinks they have the winning horse. However, many will walk away without the money they came with and without the winning ticket. It is just the opposite in the Kingdom of God where the focus in on giving.  As Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).
If you have made a financial promise, or commitment, to your church, a ministry or charity, keep it. Our inner city communities are desperately in need of your thoughtful financial donations, and there are some great institutions trying to meet the need. We are blessed to be a blessing.  Be a good steward of your resources, your time, talent, and treasures.  Keep the faith, and finish what you have started.  Finish the race in giving!  Jesus saves!

Prayer, A New Twist on High Five Day!

By:  Angela Lee Price

"And He said to them, 'Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing set before him'; and he will answer from within and say, 'Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in the bed; I cannot rise and give to you'?  I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give  him as many  as he needs.  So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you"' Luke 11:9 NKJV.

On this National High Five Day, let's take the high five to a whole new level through prayer and intercession! Our communities need prayer like never before!  People of God, give the Lord a "high five!" Do it not because you are so good, but because God is so good. He is worthy to be praised! He heals, delivers, sanctifies, sets free, restores, and mostly importantly, Jesus saves!

A high five is more than what we do on Sunday mornings when the sermon gets good; more than something we do to when our team is winning.  A high five are the names of five people for whom we are constantly praying! These are five people who may be hard to reach.  These are people who may have given up on God.  They may not want to about Jesus, but you can pray for them. Ask, seek, and knock in your prayers as you tell the Lord about the needs of your five friends, relatives, co-workers, even your enemies. Pray in the name of Jesus. You are asking the One with all power on earth and in heaven to touch their lives when you pray in Jesus name for your friends and family, even your enemies to receive Christ.
Saul of Tarsus was a powerful enemy of Christian. No one could witness to him. He was full of hate. He persecuted Christians, but he met Jesus on the Road to Damascus and became one of the greatest proponents for Christianity who ever lived.

The Lord hears our requests when we ask, seek, and knock not because we are so good, but because of our persistence in prayer, "I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs (Luke 11:8). Never doubt that God is able to do exceeding, abundantly more than we can ask or think according to the power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20).
Do NOT think your prayers are weak or ineffective for the five people who are hard to reach or who may have rejected Jesus Christ. If they are hard, you "go hard" in your prayer life!  Ask, seek, and knock are really three different ways of doing the same thing.   In order words, you should ask, and ask, and keep on asking in prayer.  Now give yourself the highest of fives, a list of five people you are constantly praying for. Friends don't let friends miss heaven!  So, intercede to high heaven for your five people to be saved or reconnected to Jesus Christ today! Don't give up on them because God didn't give up on us!   Jesus died and rose again while we were yet sinners that we might have relationship with God, an abundant life here on earth, and eternal life in heaven. There is power in prayer! The prayers of the righteous availeth much!!

Make His Praise Glorious!

"Shout with joy to God, all the earth!  Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious!  Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds!  So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you.  All the earth bows down to you.  They sing praise to you.  They sing praise to your name.  Selah.  Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man's behalf!"  Psalm 66:1-5.

Gospel artist Martha Munizzi has a song entitled, "Glorious."  We play it on the radio.   When you hear this upbeat song, you can't help but to praise God because a reoccuring line in the song states, "I was created to make Your praise glorious!"   The song reminds us that our top priority on the job, at lunch, and throughout the day is to put God first and give Him glorious praise in thought and in deed.

Psalm 66 is a great foundational  and complementary text to Martha Munizzi's song, "Glorious."  The psalmist reminds us we are here to give God glorious praise!  When we think about how awesome God is, we should become thankful for His goodness towards us.  He's the uncaused Cause who causes everything to exist; He's the God who causes our solar systerm, the galaxies, and the universe to hang in the heavens; He's the God who delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage and into the Promise Land; and He's the God who was so mindful of tiny, insignificant humanity that He gave His only Son to die for our sins!   When we think about all this, how awesome (terrible) is our God, we should want to make our praise glorious!

To make His praise glorious we should  1) "Shout with joy to God (v1); 2) Sing the glory of his name (v2); 3) Say to Him (in prayer) (v3); and 4) Come and see what He has done (v5)!

This week, make His praise glorious!  Shout, sing, say, and invite the unchurched and dechurched to come and see our awesome God!  He is worthy to be praised!

Kenwood Baptist Church Hosted Good Friday Presentation, 7 Last Words of Jesus

I had the great honor to speak at a Good Friday Service, a presentation of the 7 Sayings of Jesus Christ from the Cross at Kenwood Northeast Baptist Church, Rev. James Booker, Sr, Pastor. I spoke on the sixth saying, the word of triumph, "It is Finished." The story of Jesus was the greatest story ever told, and "Tetelestai - It is finished," the greatest word ever uttered! I am so full with gratitude on today because the Holy Spirit, through this assignment gave me expanded understanding on this word for the people. I enjoyed the service and ministry of music, and of course the powerful words by ministers from More Than Conquerors Church, Greater Salem Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, St. Stephen Church Hardin County, St. Stephen Church Louisville/Jesus Saves Ministries, and Kenwood Northeast Baptist Church.
