Why not make 2012 your "WWW." year for ministry! Join us in sharing the Good News that Jesus saves. This year we're focusing on three elements, Worship, Word, and Witness -- period. When we worship God, study His Word, and witness to others we connect to God, grow in knowledge of Him, serve Him, and, share what He has done in our lives. I believe that many more churches and ministries will "point and click" to add the ever-growing dimension of the worldwide web to their ministry options for reaching the next generation of Christians for Jesus Christ, and it does not yet appear what we shall be when we...

Worship

To worship God is to give Him praise, honor, and glory because of who He is, the one true and living God. Effective 21st century ministry shows believers and non-believers alike who we should worship, why we should worship, how we should worship, and the benefits of worship. Worship is neither mundane nor boring, but it engages people of all ages in participatory reverence and celebration of God through prayer, praise, and proclamation of the Word of God.

Word
Effective ministry makes studying the Word of God essential for Christian maturity. The Word of God is a “lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path” (Psalms 119:105). The Word helps us to see ourselves as God sees us. The Word helps us make corrections in our lives for righteous living. The Great Commission says we are to “make disciples,” to teach, baptize, teach (Matthew 28:19-20). Aptly taught and applied Word makes disciples, and not just followers. Disciples are “doers of the Word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). Vibrant Bible Studies, Sunday schools, and small groups that engage children, youth, and adults are critically important to effective ministry.
Witness
Ministry that is effective not only reaches in and edifies the body of Christ, but also reaches out, even to the world wide web, to help save the lost through witness. Considering the numbers of churches on every corner in every city, and the size of some of our mega churches, we should be bumping into each other on the streets with our complimentary Bibles and tracks eager to share the Good News with anyone willing to give us half a minute of their time. Could it be we are settling for the creature comforts of padded pews and familiarity, only to discuss Jesus with those whom we know because they are members of the church? Or are we uncomfortable defending the faith and sharing our testimonies, so we don’t do it? Church growth through new converts, and not church-hopping Christians, should be the goal of witnessing and evangelism ministries.

My experience is Christian ministry centers around, but is not exclusively related to, assimilating new members into the predominately African American church. My responsibilities have included decision counseling, baptisms, new members’ class, and spiritual gifts class, the first steps in assisting new members to find their proper places in bible fellowship and in ministry. Additionally, I have an extensive background as a radio personality on a gospel music station in the city. I enjoy witnessing to the community at large. Also, I am founder of this small, internet-based, and community-based ministry, Jesus Saves Ministries, of which the Jesus Saves Social Network is a component. My ministry demonstrates the relevancy of the Cross of Christ in the 21^st century through innovative approaches to reach a new generation with the Good News that Jesus saves.

I encourage you to commit in 2012 to incorporate in new and profound ways, worship, Word, and witness in your daily life both in your local church and here on the worldwide web. No matter what city, state, and country you may live in, God can and will use you to bless someone else when you step out in faith and use your gifts and talents to glorify Him. Make 2012 your "WWW." year, worship, Word, and witness with Jesus Saves Ministries!

New Year, New You Workshop Helps Ex-Offenders Expunge Records, Regain Voting Rights

The first in a series of "New Year, New You" workshops, Expungement and Voting Rights was held on Saturday, January 21st at the St. Stephen Family Life Center in Louisville. The workshop was designed to help ex-offenders become productive citizens by providing them with the information and resources needed to obtain criminal record expungements and regain voting rights in time for the 2012 Presidential Election. Attendees asked questions, and obtained applications and materials from presenters Min. Angela Lee Price on restoration of voting rights and attorney Josephine Buckner on criminal record expungements. "It is so easy to look at individuals and say, you did the crime, you suffer the consequences. However, when you look at Kentucky versus other states across the nation, you discover that there is more going on here than meets the eye," Min. Price stated. "Kentucky permanently bars former felons from voting without gubernatorial petition. That is counter to God's law of forgiveness and reconciliation. That is one reason why I have been helping former felons regain their voting rights for seven years," stated Price. Kentucky and Virginia are the last two remaining states that permanently disenfranchise all people with felony convictions, unless they receive individual, discretionary, executive clemency," states the Brennan Center for Justice on page 4 of an extensive national report, Restoring The Right To Vote released in 2008. In stark contrast, voting rights are automatically restored in 13 states including Indiana and the District of Columbia once former felons are released from prison. In two states, Maine and Vermont, even prisoners may vote.

"Alot of times when people start an endeavor with the court system, they don't know where to start, and taking that first step is often the hardest step. The fact that they can see the forms, get information on how to fill them out properly, find out where to go, how much it is going to cost, they can make their plan and be successful," stated Josephine Buckner.

Capacity Crowd Witnesses WLOU FM Launch Celebration

On Sunday, January 16th, an overflowing capacity audience of nearly 4,000 worshippers packed Canaan Christian Church to help celebrate the launch of Louisville’s new gospel fm radio station, Praize 104.7. The celebration, hosted by WLOU Radio featured Stellar Award-winning national gospel recording artist James Fortune & FIYA, Joe Leavell and One Purpose and BET Sunday's Best Season Two finalist Jonathan "Jon Jon" Johnson. WAVE-TV 3 anchor Dawn Gee, a WLOU alumnus, served as the mistress of ceremonies.

Fourth District Metro Councilman David Tandy presented WLOU/WLLV General Manager Bill Price with a certificate recognizing WLOU for more than 50 years of service, and for the launch of the new Praize 104.7.

“I want thank Russ Jones, President of Anchor Broadcasting for his continued support and belief in the community,” Bill Price stated. WLOU began simulcasting on FM on December 21st. Price also received plaques from his staff, and his family recognizing his legendary accomplishments in radio. “I’d also like to thank the staff for their continued commitment. I’d like to give special thanks to Purvis, Ms. Krystal and Jay Ford. I’d like to thank my wife who’s been involved with WLOU off and on for over 25 years, and my family for always staying by my side,” stated Price.

The launch celebration came just one day after WLOU won a Stellar Award for Mid Market Radio Station of the Year. The Stellar Gospel Music Awards is the first and only annual nationally-televised awards show honoring African American gospel music artists and broadcasters around the nation. The audience cheered when afternoon announcer Brodric Purvis presented the award on stage.

Canaan Christian Church Pastor Dr. Walter Malone welcomed the capacity audience seated in the main sanctuary and the church’s overflow sections. Bates Memorial Baptist Church Pastor Rev. F. Bruce Williams rendered the invocation and closing prayer, and Greater St. James AME Church Pastor Rev. Geoff Ellis gave remarks on behalf of the Interdemoninational Ministerial Coalition.

James Fortune and FIYA arrived freshed from the 2012 Stellar Award where they gave a stellar performance during the live taping scheduled to air on BET in February. Their performance of songs, "Still Able," "It Could Be Worse" from the new CD, Identity, and favorite, "I Trust You," from the sophomore CD, The Transformation, brought the standing-room only crowd to their feet. Fortune ministered of God's grace and delivering power, and shared testimony of a time when he and his wife were previously homelessness.

WLOU Wins Stellar Award for Medium Market Radio Station of the Year

Congratulations to PraizePower 1350 WLOU Radio and the new Praize 104.7 winner of a 2012 Stellar Award today for Medium Market Radio Station of the Year. The Stellar Gospel Music Awards is the first and only annual nationally-televised awards show honoring African American gospel music artists. The 27th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards is being held today, January 14th, 2012 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.

WLOU Radio is one of the oldest black-formatted radio stations in the nation, serving Louisville, Kentucky and Southern Indiana since 1951. On December 21, 2011, WLOU made history when it launched Praize 104.7, WLOU on FM. WLOU is hosting an Official Launch Celebration tomorrow, January 15th, 6:00 PM at Canaan Christian Church evening featuring Stellar Awarding-winning gospel artist James Fortune & FIYA who is up for Stellar Awards tonight in three categories. It names media pioneers William E. Summers, III and John H. Johnson among former owners.

On receiving the nomination, WLOU/WLLV Radio General Manager Bill Price states, "It is a tremendous honor when you think about the number of gospel radio stations around the country, and you are narrowed down to 16 stations in all categories. Press Towards The Mark: What Are Your New Year's Resolutions?

Paul said in Phillippians 3:13-14, "Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

I don't know about you, but 2011 was a particularly rough one for me. I really had to spend a lot of quality time with the Lord, sometimes just being still, reading the Word and praying for guidance. Even though it was rough, tough really, I thank God for all His wonderful blessings upon my life. He kept me, and my family, from dangers seen and unseen, and I am grateful. He kept a roof over our heads, and food on our plates.

Paul says we ought to let go of some things in order to press toward spiritual goals in our lives. Keeping too many things can make for a very cluttered and unhealthy life. What is it that you are letting go of as we begin 2012? Is it bitterness, resentment, anger, jealousy, envy? We should let go of those things. Negativity blocks us from receiving all that God has for us.

What New Year's resolutions have you made? Will you pray more in 2012?...control your temper?...be more socialable?...get a degree?...get involved in a Bible study group? Will you share your faith and tell more people about the God you serve? Setting goals for the new year is one way of demonstrating your faith in God. After all, faith without works is dead (James 2:17).

Scripture tells us God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us (Ephesians 3:20). So, set those goals and make those resolutions to become better, stronger, and wiser in the Lord! And pray not just for "good" ideas, but for "God" ideas. Being on God's agenda in 2012 ought to be our number one priority, and any goals, ideas, or resolutions inspired by the Holy Ghost will not return void. We would love to hear from you? Post one or two of your New Year's resolutions now as you press toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called you!

And the Wise Men Gave Gifts: What's Inside Your Bag?

Matthew 2:1-2; 10-12 KJV

(v1) Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.
(v2) Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
(v 10) When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
(v11) And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Who were these wise men, these gift givers? They were outsiders, Gentiles called Magi or Magicians. They were from Persia, modern day Iraq. Magi among the Persians were their intellectuals, philosophers and priests. Persia and the eastern nations were known for their star gazing, astrology, and idol worship. God in his infinite wisdom and sovereignty spoke to the Magi in a langueage they could understand, their language of the stars and drew them from afar, some 800 miles to worship the newborn King. You should be shouting right there! The Bibles says at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every astrologer, magician, and soothsayer, and tongue shall confess Jesus as Lord!

No doubt their gifts were wrapped with beautiful bows and ribbons of multi colors, cut from the finest cloth. To these wise men money was no object. Can’t you hear the rapper, Fabolous, “Just throw it in the bag!... Look at the price tags? Where they do that at? We're from the PER. Where they do that at? Just throw it in the bag!” They traveled, following an extraordinary star, to present their best to the newborn King, products from their far-away country, gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Some commentaries suggest they offered gold as tribute to the King in Jesus, rendering to Caesar that which was Caesar’s; frankincense to the God in Jesus, for God was often honored with the smoke of incense; and myrrh to the Man in Jesus, that should he die, the myrrh could be use to embalm him. The wise men gave gifts to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

I stopped by to ask, what’s inside your bag? What are you giving Jesus for Christmas?

God has given every Christian at least one gift to bring to lay before the King, a spiritual gift. First Peter 4:11 states, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (NIV).

Ephesians 4:7-8 tells us Jesus, the Perfect Gift, has given gifts to men. Our gifts have been given “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (v12). He didn’t save us to sit. He saved us to serve!

Even if some of your gifts appear to be a mystery to you a little while, your gifts will find you out. Your gifts will make room for you. Has anyone come up to you lately and said, “You’re good at that!,” “You should consider doing such and such in the church?” Those are quite possibly times when your gifts are making themselves known. Stephen (Acts 6-7) was the first disciple martyred for the faith in the New Testament. Stephen’s gifts were known to the multitude. And so, Stephen was voted into office as deacon. Stephen was one of the seven men chosen to assist the apostles in the administrative affairs of the early Jerusalem church. He is most noted for his outstanding character, faith, wisdom, courage, and willingness to contend for the faith against false accusation and fierce opposition. St. Stephen Church is named after Stephen.

Stephen, a wise man gave his gifts to the King!

a. administration (v3,5)
b. wisdom (v3)
c. faith (v5)
d. teaching (v9-10, chapter 7)
e. prophecy (v9-10, chapter 7)
f. martyrdom (chapter 7, 7:60)

In addition to these gifts, Stephen was fine! He had it “going on!” In my sanctified imagination, he had to have looked like Denzel Washington for the Sanhedrin crowd could not help but stare at him when he spoke because “they saw that his face was like the face of an angel (chapter 6:15). What's in your bag?

I know, some of you are saying I have no money. I have no job. I can’t afford Gucci, Lou Vuitton. I’m like the Little Drummer Boy and Alicia Keys singing “Little Drummer Girl” where she says, “Christmas is lost. I have no gifts to bring to lay before the King. Br rump, pa, pa, pum. It’s just me and my drum!” The bible says brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1). Bring discernment, evangelism, and giving; bring hospitality, intercession, and knowledge; bring pastoring, teaching and writing; bring your musical gifts, vocal and instrumental.

Sing glory to God in the Highest! Sing glory to God in the Highest! Sing glory to God in the Highest and on Earth Peace (Luke 2:14)!

Does Everybody Love Chris?

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlastinglife" John 3:16.

There is a popular television show called, Everybody Loves Raymond. As I listen on the radio and look around on television, in the stores, everywhere at the Santas, elves, reindeer, and snowmen, it appears everybody loves Chris, too (Kringle, that is), and fewer people love Christ. There is good reason to love Chris, but there is a better reason to love Christ. With Chris, you might get a gift, but with Christ, you get The Gift. With Chris, you might get savings, but with Christ, you get saved. With Chris, it's a wonderful life, but with Christ it's a wonderful eternity! With Chris, you might receive, but with Christ it is more blessed to give than to receive.

While John 3:16 is often overlooked as being a "Christmas verse" we can easily see the loving, giving heart of the Father in that he gave His only begotten Son for our sins. God the Father set the example of giving, and it was carried on in the life of Christ from the manger to the Cross. In turn Jesus commands us in John 13:34, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

Well, who do you love? Are you with everybody? Do you love Chris or Christ? I encourage you at this wonderful time of year as we celebrate our newborn King to appreciate our giving God and His loving Son, Jesus Christ, and His Holy Spirit who helps us to cheerfully give. Jesus gave his life for our sins. Jesus is the reason for the season. Join me in keeping Christ in Christmas. Jesus saves!

Churches Turn Black Friday Into Bless Friday to Give Back to Others - BCNN1

I think Black Friday is getting out of hand! My husband and stepson went out last night and there were lines wrapped around the buildings at Target and Walmart. My husband said he had never seen so many cars on the parking lot at Walmart. Thursday's newspaper was double the size of a normal Sunday paper. I just think it's getting out of hand, don't you? Jesus deserves at least one FULL day of thankfulness! But, Oh, no! Now we have to cut Thanksgiving in half, and gulp our Egg Nog in order to be in lines at 4:00 and 5:00 o'clock for Black Friday deals. Something's wrong with that! I tweeted earlier today, "Read the red in your black bible and you won't go in the red on Black Friday!" I keep thinking about "Young Money," at least that's what I call the rich young ruler in the Bible. Young Money kept all the commandmants, but when Jesus told him to sale all his possessions and follow him, he went away sad. Young Money had it all, cash, cars, and mansions, but what he needed was a relationship with Jesus. If only we would sit still long enough to be grateful what what we have....If only!

I found this article on the internet and it blessed my soul, Churches Turn Black Friday Into Bless Friday to Give Back to Others. We are supposed to be impacting the world. Instead, the world is impacting us. I know we are all busy and there are only so many vacation days, and the Friday after Thanksgiving is that day for alot of people, but please! Not all of us need to stand in line on Thanksgiving to buy something that will be on sale cheaper next week. Many Christians have more stuff in their closets than they need. A way to give back might mean cleaning out the closets and having a huge consignment event at the church on Black Friday, a event where we give back and share the gospel at the same time. What we all really need is Jesus not another doorbuster sale!

Sermon Excerpt: How to Live and Not Die

"If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10;9).
If you could ask God one question right now, what would it be? Chances are it’s “Am I going to heaven when I die?” Going to heaven is the number one reason new Christians give for confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We are being reminded so frequently of the reality of death so to ask that question only makes good sense. Statistics suggest more than one person is dying every second - 4,000 an hour, 96,000 a day, more than 35,000,000 a year. Approximately 1,700 service men and women have died in the war in Afghanistan and 4,500 have died in the war in Iraq. The Bible speaks clearly about death, "There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die (Ecc. 3:1-2).

Death is real. No matter how real it is, some people refuse to think about death. Some are nonchalant about it. Others live in fear of it. Saint and sinner, rich and poor, death is no respecter of persons, not for Michael Jackson, Dorothy Height, Osama Bin Laden, Moummar Qaddafi, Pastor Zachery Tims, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, nor Andy Rooney. Just last week, former heavyweight boxing champion, the first boxer to defeat Muhammad Ali in the "Thrilla in Manilla," Smokin’ Joe Frazier, and the “Overweight Lover,” “Money-earning Mt. While I’m rapping about what I’m rappin about, let me sing, too, a few facts about death.

"What goes around comes back around, hey, my baby! What goes around comes back around, hey, my baby!" Beyonce sings this hip hop song, and it is quite popular. However...

1. You are not coming back again. (Hebrews 9:27)
The fact is you will go around, but you will not come back around, baby! That’s called Reincarnation. Reincarnation in a New Age and Eastern religion belief. It is closely aligned with Karma, the belief that good and bad actions in this life must be worked out in the next life. If you are good in this life, you might come back in the next life as rich, if you are poor. The Bible declares in Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” This is to say the decisions you make on earth will determine where you will spend eternity. The Bible clearly states reincarnation is not true, Hebrews 9:27 says, "It is appointed for man to die once and for all, and after that to face Judgment.” The Bible declares that for the Christian, “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!”

My second “verse” about death is this:

All Roads do NOT lead to heaven (John 14:6).

Though we are sitting in padded pews, we are in transit. We are on the move. We are going somewhere. Ask your neighbor, “Where are you going?” Since you are not coming back again, and we are all going somewhere, you need to maximize your moments in transit. Hear this Word today. Don’t believe the hype. All roads do NOT take you to heaven. Some roads have forks in them. Some roads are culdersacks and some roads are dead ends. There's only one road that can get you to heaven. Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one get to the Father but by me.” (John 14:6). This means that Buddha can’t take you to heaven! Muhammad can’t take you to heaven! Confucius can’t take you to heaven! Your good works won’t get you there! Only Jesus Christ can get you to heaven. He says, “I am the Way!”

How can we live and not die? I am glad you asked! There is a road that will take you to Jesus and straight to heaven! It is called The Roman Road. The Roman Road is found on Route 66, the 66 books of the Bible, God’s Super Highway to heaven. When you travel the Roman Road, the first thing you will discover is …

I – Incorrigible

The definition is “Incapable of being changed or reformed; difficult to control or retrain.” We are incorrigible. We cannot change ourselves! The Bible uses the word, “Iniquity.” The Psalmist sings...

Psalm 51:5, Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Psalm 25:11, For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.

Psalm 38:18, For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

N – Negative

Definition: Expressing opposition or denial; lacking any affirmative quality. When we have a negative bank account, that means we owe money. There's nothing "affirmative," or good quality about that. Our naturally negative natures puts us in arrears with God from the beginning. We don’t have a skin problem. We have a sin problem. And there is nothing we can do in and of ourselves to make up the difference. The Good News is Jesus can fix it if we face it!

Traveling the Roman Road helps us to realize our sin problem and react to our sin problem. The book of Romans says...

3:23 - All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
5:8 – God demonstrated His love for us in this, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

6:23 – The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

10:9 – If we confess with our mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart God raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved.
10:13 – Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Romans 10:9 contains two important phrases. " Jesus is Lord" is a confession of faith. “Lord” is the translation of the Greek word kurios. This is the regular way of translating the Hebrew name for God, “Yahweh” in the Greek. Jesus is not only the “Messiah” in the Hebrew which means “Christ” in the Greek, but He is also “Yahweh,” God. We believe God raised Him from the dead. Mary Magalene, the women and disciples all saw Jesus after His resurrection (John 20). We believe Jesus shares the same nature with God. He was not just a prophet, as the Muslims believe, He is God. Jesus was fully human and fully God. Colossians 2:9, “For the entire fullness of God’s nature, dwells bodily in Christ.”
I have attended a number of funerals over the past month. I had an aunt to past a month ago, too. God showed me that many of the saints confessed Jesus Christ at an early age. My aunt Louise Smith did that. Long before she made it to New York, New Jersey, and Georgia, she realized at an early age that, as Marvin Sapp sings, she never wouldn't made it with the Lord. She woulda lost it all. She realized that if God be for her, that He's more than the world against her! She realized with Jesus in her life, that know matter what the world threw at her, racism, depression, recession, wars, and calamity; no matter what her haters planned for her with their jealous, envious selves, no matter what the devil dished up, sickness, confusion, lies, and malice, she would live and not die!

Jesus said, I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Not only did these people confess Jesus early, they lived life abundantly. I am not saying that once you accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior that everything is going to be peaches and cream. God can give you valuable treasures, love, joy, peace, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, perseverence, patience, and self control. Also, when the doctors say “No,” God can say “Yes” and extend your life. Ask Magic Johnson. Magic Johnson has been living 20 years with HIV. He said if he knew then what he knows now, he never would have retired from the Lakers. Ask King Hezekiah in the Bible. Once Hezekiah found out he was going to die, he cried to the Lord, and the Lord gave Him 15 more years to live (2 Kings 20: 1-7)!
Paul said “To live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Phil 1:21 NIV). This means that if I live for the One Person worth dying for, Jesus Christ, that even when I die, I shall live.

The Bible says, "If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Confess Jesus Christ and dare to declare today, “I shall live and not die!” Oh, bless the name of the Lord today for salvation! Jesus saves!

To Forgive or Not to Forgive, That Is the Question

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny" (Matthew 5:23-26 NIV).

Often on Fridays, I tweet, "T.G.I.F., Thank God I'm Forgiven (And It's Friday)! I teach Spiritual Gifts at church, and often in Spiritual Gifts class, I will use the acromyn "TGIF" as an icebreaker by asking members to unscramble it to form new words, phrases, and sentences. This exercise helps each person to understand that they have at least one "GIFT," and they "FIT IT," because they are "GIFT-IT" of God to do the work that He has called them to do (Ephesians 4:7-8).

The whole discussion of forgiveness is important because the Bible places forgiveness above or before giftedness, "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
It is sad to see gifted people at odds with each other in the church. What is worse is to see bickering parties continue their anomosity for years, even decades. However, the Bible says not only is there a frequency within which we are to forgive, seven times seventy (Matt. 18:21), but that there is a timeframe within which we are to forgive, "quickly" (v 25). We should do everything we can to resolve our differences often and to settle them out of court, Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge (v 25).

Preach The Word: A Prayer for Pastors and Preachers

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gifts you have given the church for the equipping of the saints and for the building up of the body of Christ. Today, we pray for pastors and preachers. Lord, Your Word says, "But how can they call on Him they have not believed in? How can they believe without hearing about Him? And how can they hear with a preacher?" (Romans 10:14). We thank you for pastors and preachers who are not ashamed of the Gospel and who rightly divide the Word of Truth. We thank you that Your Word shall not return void!

We ask You, Lord to rebuke those pastors and preachers who are adulterating Your Word for monetary gain, and leading Your sheep astray. Protect Your flocks from wolves in sheep's clothing, we pray. May these men and women repent and return to their first love. We ask forgiveness, Father for worshipping our pastors instead of You. Keep our clergy spiritually and physically fit through higher education and wise counsel. Restore to us a prophetic church. In Jesus Name, Amen.

I Shall Live And Not Die (A Tribute to Louise Smith)

Thank you for your prayers for me and my family during our time of bereavement. God is good! He provided traveling grace to me, my husband, and to my family who traveled from New York to the wonderful homegoing celebration of my aunt Louise Smith on Monday, October 24th, Mars Hill Baptist Church, Dallas, Georgia. The pastor, Rev. Robert Bryant officiated. Mars Hill is the oldest African American church in Paulding County, Georgia. It was founded in 1866 and is 145 years old. My uncle John Smith, aunt Louise's husband was laid to rest there in August 2005.

I was blessed with the awesome assignment of delivering the eulogy. The Lord gave me a passage in the book of Romans on that super highway to heaven, the Roman Road.The message was entitled, I Shall Live And Not Die, based on Romans 10:13, "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." I stated that there is a time to be born and a time to die, a time to weep and a time to mourn (Ecclesiates 3:1-4). Approximately 1,700 have died in the war in Afghanistan and 4,500 have died in the war in Iraq.Death happens to us all, Michael Jackson, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Height, Osama Bin Laden, Muammar Gaddafi, and Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth who was eulogized on October 24th as well.

A Prayer for the Lost to be Saved

Father, We have come to You by faith this month viligently interceding with all types of prayers in accordance with Your Word (Ephesians 6:18, James 5:15). We believe that the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous availeth much (James 5:16). We pray today for the lost to be saved. We know it is Your will that none should perish for Your Word says, "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). Your Word says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). We thank You, O Lord, Jesus saves!

We pray also for new believers to be baptized. Your Word says, "Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost" (Acts 2:38). Baptism, Oh Lord, is the first step in obedience to You. Father, Your Son Jesus was baptized and You were there with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17)! Not only where You there, Lord, but You spoke saying, "this is my beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased (3:17)" Be pleased with baptism candidates as they prepare for this special occasion in their lives. Don't let the devil steal their joy or any gifts You have given them. We thank you that the wind, and the waves obey Your voice. Finally, Father, we pray for those who has been baptized for all the wrong reasons. May they re-examine themselves by the light of Scripture and run to Your pool for You are a Holy God. In Jesus Name, Amen!

How Many Crosses Does It Take to Kill A Vampire Today?

Scripture says, "Those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up" (John 3:20, GNV).

Many people love to go to masquerade balls and parties dressed as witches, warlocks, ghouls, and vampires, especially at Halloween. The bats will be flying this year, no doubt. And there'll be the quinessential dracula introduction or two, "Good Evening. Let me introduce myself." With shows like Vampire Diaries, Twilight, True Blood, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and movies like Blade to name a few, the subject of vampires is being pushed by Hollywood now more than ever. A vampire is a human who feeds on the blood of other humans. Vampires historically sleep by day and roam the earth at night. Vampires have supernatural powers and can live for thousands of years unless killed in the proper manner, so goes folklore. As we prepare to give a Christian defense for the season of Halloween, let's explore the subject of vampires.

Are vampires real? Do humans actually drink human blood? What does the Bible have to say?

In the movies back in the day, all you needed was a cross and some garlic to protect yourself from the draculas and vampires of old. Today's vampires attend vampire "clubs" and go on blood-drinking binges. In the cable series, True Blood, werewolves drink blood too. It's like they're part human, part werewolf and part vampire. How many crosses must you wear to turn back one of them? Does the size of the cross matter? Must a stake be driven in their hearts to kill them? What are some of the disturbing new trends in vampire flicks today, or in the news concerning murders associated with vampirism? What should the Christian response be to anyone caught up in vampirism and the occult?

I Shall Live And Not Die (In Memory of Louise O. Smith)

Aunt Louise was the matriarch of our family on my mother's side. She was 94. Our foreparents endured much, sacrificed their very lives to path the way for the freedoms we enjoy, and take for granted. Louise Smith was born September 21, 1917 at a time when the legacy of slavery, segregation and discrimination weighed heavily on black america.

I was blessed with the awesome assignment of delivering the eulogy. The Lord gave me a passage in the book of Romans on that super highway to heaven, the Roman Road. The message was entitled, I Shall Live And Not Die, based on Romans 10:13, "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." I stated that there is a time to be born and a time to die, a time to weep and a time to mourn (Ecclesiates 3:1-4). There are two ways we can respond to death, in time and in eternity. We can respond to death in time by making preparations for death. Though we are siting in our padded pews, we are in transit. We are going somewhere. We are going to die. We need to gather policies, make funeral arrangements early and not put it off. Confusion happens and burden is placed on surviving family members when we don't act responsibly and prepare for death. Secondly, we need to grieve responsibilty. We need to stop telling our boys and males, "Big boys don't cry," "Real men don't cry." That is a lie from hell. David, Abraham, Hezekiah, Joseph, Jeremiah, Peter, and Jesus all cried. I quoted my pastor, Rev. Kevin Cosby who stated in the sermon, When You Just Can't Get Over It, "We have faith and we have feelings... We need a cry room for adults and well as for babies, a place to deal with unresolved pain and hope...Grief is the emotional sorrow caused by the loss of anyone or anything we have a strong emotional attachment to."

We prepare for death in time, and we should prepare for death in eternity. Louise Smith was a godly woman, a loving and devoted sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt, friend and devoted wife to one husband for 65 years. Not only was she all these things, she was wise beyond her years. She called on the name of the Lord in her youth, confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and dared to declare in the face of racism, depression, wars, sickness and disease, "I shall live and not die!" She dealt with death in time too, saying "I will bless the Lord at all times. His praises shall continually be in my mouth....(Psalm 34). Hers was a Christian faith that declared, "The Lord is my light and my salvation, Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?..(Psalm 27). Louise Smith called on the Lord at an early age in Pineland, South Carolina, long before she made it to New York, New Jersey, and Georgia. She knew, as Marvin Sapp sings, she never woulda made it without the Lord. She woulda lost it all.

We can travel the super highway to heaven, along Route 66, the 66 books of the Bible, and particularly the Roman Road,
Romans 3:23
Romans 5:8
Romans 6:23
Romans 10:9
Romans 10:13
and dare to declare, "I shall live and not die."

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Matthew 3:16-17

I have been focusing on the baptism of Jesus this year. There, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were present. The Father speaks, the Holy Spirit descends, and the Son is baptized. In the vernacular of church folk, they "showed up and showed out!" This is the best example of the Trinity in the bible. Hallelujah! Glory to God!

In an age when too many children are fatherless and/or parents choose not to attend major events in their children's lives, it is significant that not only is the Father present at the baptism of Jesus, but that He speaks. He acknowledges His love for His Son and how proud (well pleased) He is of Him, "And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" (Matt. 3:18). Our children need our love and support. They need the confidence that only parents and guardians can give. It says to me that with baptisms being of such significance in the lives of our children and family members, that if God and the Holy Spirit can take the time to show up for Jesus' baptism, we ought show up for our children's baptisms, birthdays, graduations, weddings, recitals, award ceremonies, and other events, for that matter, -- and, moreover, as born-again believers we ought get in the baptismal pool with them. Many churches allow their church members to assist in the baptism of their family members. This makes the baptism a special moment not just for the person being baptized, but for the family.

It is significant, too that the Holy Spirit is present, "...and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him" (Matt. 3:17). We are reassured that Jesus was well qualified to do what God sent Him here to do. He was given the authority and He the power. Immediately after, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan, and He begins his ministry (Matt 4:12-22). At salvation, we are sealed with the Spirit of God. This means we have all we need to do what God has called us to do. Glory to God!

I pray now, in the name of Jesus, that more people will be dipped this year, that they will repent of their sins, accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and be baptized (Act 2:38). For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). I pray, too, that parents will resolve to do the right thing in 2011 by their children -- make time for them, explain to them who Jesus is, and talk with them about accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. I pray, Lord, that parents will show up with their children at church, and at their baptism. And then, Father, my prayer is that parents will begin to show up for their children at school, and at all those important events in their lives, show out even! Our children need their parents, Oh Lord, guardians, grandparents, God parents, mentors, and the adults in their lives to acknowledge and support them. Help us to give our young people the love, support, confidence, and tools they need to succeed as Christians and in this world. Amen.

President Barack Obama saluted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday as a man who "stirred our conscience" and made the Union "more perfect," rejoicing in the dedication of a monument memorializing the slain civil rights leader's life and work.

"I know we will overcome," Obama proclaimed, standing the 30-foot granite monument to King on the National Mall. "I know this," the president said, "because of the man towering over us."

Obama and his wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, joined a host of civil rights figures for the dedication on the sun-splashed Mall. Designed as what King described as a stone of hope hewn from a mountain of despair, the memorial is the first to a black man on the National Mall and its parks.

"He had faith in us," said Obama, who was 6 when King was assassinated in 1968. Obama told the crowd, "And that is why he belongs on this Mall: Because he saw what we might become."

The dedication has special meaning for the Obamas. The president credits King with paving his way to the White House. Before his remarks, he left signed copies of his inaugural speech and 2008 convention address in a time capsule at the monument site. The first couple and daughters Malia and Sasha made a more private visit to the site on Friday night, before the crowds and the cameras arrived.

In his talk, he focused on King's broad themes - equality, justice and peaceful resistance - as the nation confronts, 48 years later, some of the same issues of war, an economic crisis and a lingering distrust of government in some quarters.

Obama, Aretha Franklin to Headline MLK Monument Dedication this Weekend - BCNN1

President Barack Obama will deliver the keynote address and Aretha Franklin will headline the entertainers at this weekend's dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall.

The dedication was postponed from late August because of Hurricane Irene.

Journalist Roland Martin will be the emcee. Besides Obama, speakers will include civil rights leaders Julian Bond, Rep. John Lewis, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and members of the King family. Journalist Dan Rather will also speak.

A ceremonial dedication will be held at 11 a.m. on the grounds of the memorial, where the queen of soul will perform.

The towering 30-foot monument is the first dedicated to a black leader on the National Mall.

Sisters Road to Freedom Hosts First Annual Women's Conference

Much love and congrats to Therese Warrick (left with me) founder, Sisters Road to Freedom, Inc., Lexington, KY on their first women's conference, A Conversation Among Hannah's Sisters, Saturday, October 8th, the Homewood Suites Hilton Hotel. This conference was a tremendous blessing for all in attendance! Speakers included Rev. Dr. Felix G. Williams, III, opening prayer, Sis. Chantel Depp, A Conversation on the Mental Health of Hannah's Sisters, Ms. Shirley Riley, Foundation of Money Management, PNC Bank, Evangelist Eva Gooch, closing prayer, and myself, A Conversation Among Hannah's Sisters.

My topic was Hannah: The Power of Persistent Prayer, 1 Samual 1:1-20. I divided the women into four tables and had them to discuss:
1) The "Conversation" between Hannah and Penniniah;
2) The Conversation between Hannah and her Partner;
3) The Conversation between Hannah and the Priest; and 4) The Conversations between Hannah and her Provider.

The women shared much and learned much from this story of a Hannah, a barren women, provoked by her husband's other wife, who cried out in persistent prayer to God for a child. God answered her prayer in the course of time and gave her the prophet, priest, and last judge Samuel, one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament.

Most pastors and church leaders will tell you that they want the singers to sing and then don't say anything else. That's a little secret among pastors that most in the church do not know.

In fact, pastors cringe with nervousness when singers start talking before they sing, or if they start talking after they sing, or even if they start praying. I know that many musicians and church people do not know this, but most pastors just want the singer to sing and exit the stage as fast as possible.

But Tony Evans bucked the system tonight and allowed Kirk Franklin to preach, not sing, but Preach!

One of the things that Kirk Franklin said was that "Pastors and church leaders, while you have been busy trying to build your church, get on TBN, and keep up with your twenty-five 'armor-bearers,' you have lost your influence, your families, and the young people who used to come to your church and you need to humble your selves and repent." He also said that 'I personally know all of the superstar pastors and churches that have crashed and failed over the past seven years -- and the thing that hurts me the most is that I hardly ever saw any humility among these church leaders.'

Pastor Marvin Sapp Turns Up the Volume

My husband Bill and I went to Christ Temple Church Thursday, September 23rd to see Pastor Marvin Sapp. He was the guest speaker for Bishop Michael E. Ford's 19th Pastoral Anniversary. The placed was packed! There were people standing outside listening by the doors waiting to get in when we left. I posted three videos on the website, one of Sapp's opening remarks, and the other two of him singing Best In Me and Praise Him In Advance. Sapp said he would sing Never Would Have Made It at the end.

I am sorry I wasn't able to post any of his sermon, Turn Up the Volume. However, the sermon dealt with the familiar story of Paul and Silas in the prison cell from Acts 16:25-26 with focus on the B clause of verse 25, "and the prisoners were listening to them." In his opening remarks, Sapp stated that life is filled with swift transition, and we have to function in purpose despite what we go through. We have to function in our assignment even though we don't feel like it. Our problem is we have confused our gifts with our purpose. My purpose is that which I was created for in the beginning of time. Adam was created to be in constant communion with God and to have dominion over the earth. Jesus restored that purpose after Adam sinned. The Holy Ghost didn't come just so we could speak with other tongues. The Holy Ghost came so that we could have power to be effective witnesses. Our purpose is to be worshipping witnesses that have dominion.

Don't Give Up On Your Mums In Tulip Season!

"They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up on wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31

We give up too easily. We want eveything quick, fast, and in a hurry. No one wants to wait anymore. We want what we want when we want it, and how we want it. However, as I stated in another post, Haste has no blessing.

It is mum season! Look around. Mums are everywhere, little ones, big ones, and very, very BIG ones. You can pray for mums, but praying to receive mums in March won't get you anywhere. You are more likely to get tulips in March than you are to get mums. That's because March is tulip season. If God gives you tulips in March, thank Him anyway even though you didn't ask for them. Don't throw a tantrum, pout or get mad with God. God is not a genie, nor cosmic bellhop, nor Santa Claus, nor is He an ATM machine! Don't grow weary! Wait on the Lord!

Renew your strength. Tulips are flowers, just like mums. Tulips will beautify your garden or home, just like mums. Renew your strength by count your blessings! Thank God for your tulips, and take care of them! He didn't have to give them to you, but He did! We serve a good God who knows what to give and just when too give it.
Claim the promise is Isaiah 40:31, and keep on praying, and praying. Pray persistently in April, in May, in June, in July, in August...keep talking with God about mums, the pretty colors, and different textures, and how you plan to water and take care of them, and where you will plant them, and how mums come back year after year bigger than before. Then on say, today, in due season, or shall I say mum season, the Holy Spirit just may quicken your spirit to run to your favorite store, where big, beautiful mums are on sale buy one get one free! In due season, God just may give you double for your trouble! Just ask Job. And, I'm a living witness of what God will do when you persist, according to His will in prayer. The red mum planted in 2010 is at least twice its original size! Isn't God good! Don't give up on your mums in tulip season!

And a time to pluck what is planted;

The Power of Persistant Prayer

I was asked recently, "How many times should we pray to God about the same thing?" God has given me the word that we need to be persistent in our prayers. Jesus tells us this in Luke 11:5-9 in the parable of the man who went to his friend at midnight for three loaves of bread. The story of Hannah praying to conceive a child is a story of persistence in prayer (1 Samuel 1:1-28). The widow pleading before the unjust judge for justice is another example of persistence paying off (Luke 18:1-8). Romans 12:12 says, "Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer."

We know that God does not always answer prayers the way we want Him to or expect Him to, however, the good news is that in these instances of persistent prayer, God said "yes"! This suggests that we have not, in many cases, because we ask not persistently.

When it comes to prayer, it's important that we are consistently and persistently asking God for the lost to be saved and for our prayer requests to line up with His will for our lives! We serve a God who is able to do exceeding, abundantly above all we can ask or think!

Put Your Weight On God!
"Trust in the the Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all you ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6.)

When we sit in a chair, we just sit down it. We place our whole weight in the chair without giving it a second thought. We trust that the chair will hold us. Likewise, we should trust God to hold our weight, carry our burdens and our problems without second guessing His ability to do so.

Do you have a weight problem, give it to God! I have discovered that God knows what He's doing at all times, in times of extreme illness, obesity, adversity, struggle, and even times of death. When we lean, we place part of our weight on God and part of it on ourselves, someone else, or something else. This causes us to worry, snack and eat all the wrong foods, and prolongs our ability to get lean and lose weight. This proverb teaches us to "lean not on our own understanding." We should not lean, for example, on ungodly weight loss plans and surgeries that could potentially leave us in worst shape than we were in the beginning. We should lean not on drugs and appetite suppressants that could potentially leave us jittery and cause us to become addicted to them. We should lean not on quick fixes to cure what it took, in most cases, years to create!

God may not give you a quick fix to your weight problem, but He will give you a certain promise. God promises to "direct our paths" when we acknowledge Him "in all our ways." In acknowledging God and walking in His paths, you might discover it's not what you're eating that's your biggest problem, it's what's eating you! While you wait on God, put your weight on God. Trust in Him fully. He will carry you through!

Prayer Warriors, Give Yourselves A High Five!

"And He said to them, 'Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing set before him'; and he will answer from within and say, 'Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in the bed; I cannot rise and give to you'? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs. So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you"' Luke 11:9 NKJV.

Prayer Warriors, give yourselves a "high five!" Do it not because you are so good, but because God is so good. He is worthy to be praised! He heals, delivers, sanctifies, sets free, and mostly importantly, Jesus saves!

A high five is more than what we do on Sunday mornings when the sermon gets good. A high five are the names of five people you are constantly sending up to high heaven in prayer! These are five people who will not let you talk to them about Christ, but you can pray for them. Ask, seek, and knock in your prayers as you tell the Lord about the needs of your five friends, relatives, co-workers, even your enemies. Pray in the name of Jesus. You are asking the One with all power on earth and in heaven to touch their lives when you pray in Jesus name for your friends and family, even your enemies to receive Christ.

Saul of Tarsus was a powerful enemy of Christian. No one could witness to him. He was full of hate. He persecuted Christians, but he met Jesus on the Road to Damascus and became one of the greatest proponents for Christianity who ever lived.

The Lord hears our requests when we ask, seek, and knock not because we are so good, but because of our stedfastness in prayer, "I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs (Luke 11:8). Never doubt that God is able to do exceeding, abundantly more than we can ask or think according to the power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20).

Do not think your prayers are weak for the five people who are hard to reach and reject Christ. If they are hard, you "go hard" in your prayer life. Ask, seek, and knock are really three different ways of doing the same thing. In order words, you should ask, and ask, and keep on asking in prayer. Now give yourself a "high five" and interceed to high heaven for your five people to be saved or reconnected to Jesus Christ today! Share their first names with us and we will pray for them too. There is power in prayer.

Why Aren't Parents Training Up Their Kids?

“My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth” (Proverbs 3: 11-12 KJV)

As I reviewed Proverbs chapter 3, I thought about how busy Solomon must have been at the time he wrote the most of Proverbs. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubine. That's a lot of women, y'all! This number doesn't even include the rest of the people under his rule. Solomon built the temple that his father, King David envisioned. For him to set aside time to teach his son to fear the Lord is commendable. But, then again, isn't this what parents are supposed to be doing with their children, instructing them in the love and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4)? Instead, our kids are often running wild in the streets with pants sagging.

With the economy the way it is, people are stressed -- working two jobs, or longer hours on one job, or stressed with bills mounting as they search for work. Should that be an excuse for parents not training up their kids? We are hearing more and more cases of child neglect, adults doing unimaginable things to children, babies even. Parents are letting television babysit their children and teach them about sex, violence and immorality while they teach them nothing at all about who God is. I think Justin Bieber caused such a stir with his "God-Jesus" comments partly because many people were not expecting "Jesus" to come out of his young mouth. Chalk that up to some good parenting somewhere along the way, the kind that, in the spirit of Solomon, made a way out of no way to teach their child to fear the Lord! So, why aren't parents training up their kids, providing a good education and insisting they go to school, correcting them when they need it, and teaching them about who God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit is?

Football Trivia Bible Study: There's No "I" In Team

On Saturday, September 3rd, I was Devotion Huddle and Bible Study leader at the St. Stephen Southern IN Sister's In Spirit Monthly Breakfast. The Lord laid it on my heart to share from the subject, There Is No "I" In Team. My Scripture passage came from 1Corinthians 3:3-8. With it being Labor Day weekend and the start of football season, I reminded everyone that we are co-laborers in Christ. Great football teams like the Indianpolis Colts don't win Super Bowls because of the talents of one or two players. If we are going to accomplish anything great for God, we have to take "I" out of it. It's not about us. It's about Jesus. As Christians, we all have different gifts and talents, but it's the same Spirit working in us to accomplish His will. One plants, another waters, but God gives the increase (I Corin. 3:6). It is God who should get the glory. Team work makes the dream work!

The bible study format was very interactive, allowing everyone to contribute. After devotion and prayer, we played "'Finder's Keepers." Gifts were hidden in the field behind the church. We asked everyone to find one gift, select a scripture for their "find," and write a paragraph about it. The Holy Spirit moved among us on the amphitheater to accomplish His will! Everyone contributed with great scriptures and paragraphs to support their "find," including the men and youth. And of course, everyone got to keep what they found which included some great gifts donated by the University of Louisville.

Afterwards, we tested our knowledge of the bible and football with trivia questions. "We need a Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other if we intend to be effective witnesses on life's playing field," I stated. Who was the first black coach to win the Super Bowl? Who was last year's Super Bowl MVP, a Christian? Who was the first black assistant coach/coordinator in the SEC? Who said, "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child? What is the name of the woman who slept at the feet of her future husband? What was the name of the tree that Adam and Eve were told not to each fruit from? I gave way additional gifts, including tickets to the Louisville Bats baseball game and the Louisville Zoo, Christian t-shirts, books, water bottles, and novelties, and gospel music donated by Jesus Saves Ministries, WLOU Radio, and St. Stephen's Member Services Ministry. Everyone walked away a winner!

God Corrects His Children

“My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth” (Proverbs 3: 11-12 KJV).

Pastor and gospel singer Donnie McClurkin sang a very popular contemporary gospel song a few years ago entitled We Fall Down. In it, he encouraged all who fell down to “get back up again” with the lyrics, “for a saint is just a sinner who fell down and got up.” People fall all the time. Roller skaters fall, but because they love to skate, they “get back up again.” Gymnasts fall, from their balancing beams and parallel bars, but because they love gymnastics, they “get back up again.” In fact, the act of “getting back up again” makes skaters and gymnasts better athletes by virtue of the lessons they learn in falling. Nevertheless, because of the nature of their sports, skaters and gymnasts, basketball and tennis players, too, all anticipate that no matter how good they become, they will still, on occasion, “fall down.”

Some people believe Christians, or saints, have limitless favor with God. This is simply not the case. Saints “fall down,” by falling into sin, but because they love the Lord, they “get back up again.” Solomon remind us in Proverbs 3 to welcome the Lord’s chastisements, and not grow tired of them, “My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: (V11)” Sometimes the Lord’s chastisements can be painful, and it may seem as though He does not love us, but the Bible says, “For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. (V 12)”

Remember, it is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!

A Call for Prayer In the Wake of Irene

In the wake of Hurricane Irene, I am reminded of the night Jesus asked His disciples to watch with Him while he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt. 26: 36-46). As Jesus was about to go through a life and death storm of His very own, betrayal and death on the Cross, he was adamant about His disciples watching with Him. Even now, while Jesus intercedes at the right hand of the Father for us, His voice from the Garden of Gethsemane calls out to His disciples, people of God everywhere to watch and pray with Him in this hour. Let us be obedient to His desire for a praying church. We know that the prayers of the righteous availeth much!

Jesus' storm, like Hurricane Irene, was massive, so much so that He prayed, saying, "O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done" (v.42). Jesus was annoyed with the disciples who fell asleep at a critical time when He needed them most. Jesus said to them, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (v41)." We don't know what the future holds, only God knows. We know who holds the future. While there is huge potential for considerable loss of life from this monster storm, we have hope. Our response as people of faith in the One True God who holds life and death in the palm of His hands is to pray. Heavenly Faither, help us to remain awake, watch and pray through the storms of life, even Hurricane Irene. Help us, O God to listen and obey Your voice. Help us to be mindful of our duty to pray without ceasing with all types of prayers (Ephesians 6:18), to be on guard in times of dangers seen and unseen. May You be gloried, the people edified, and the devil horrified. In Jesus Name, Amen!

The Power to Communicate

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, and the breastplate of righteousness in place” Ephesians 6:12-14 (NIV).

In the book, The Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Women Who Started It, The Memoir of JoAnn Gibson Robinson, edited, with a forward, by David J. Garrow, JoAnn Gibson Robinson attempts to set the record straight on how the 13-month Montgomery Bus Boycott, which ended segregated seating on that city’s public transit system in 1955-56 actually began. We know the significant roles Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. played in the boycott, in bringing the issues in Montgomery, Alabama to national attention. Few history books, however, mention in any detail the critical role JoAnn Gibson Robinson and the Women’s Political Council played in starting the Civil Rights Movement.

It was this Alabama State teacher, on behalf of the WPC, who wrote a letter to Montgomery Mayor W.A. “Tacky” Gayle a year and a half before Rosa’s arrest on December 1, 1955, and insisted upon improved conditions for black riders on city buses and threatened a boycott if conditions did not improve. It was she and her WPC colleagues who immediately took action in the hours following Rosa Park’s arrest to begin the boycott. Ms. Gibson says in her book, “We women prepared the notices calling riders off the buses. We distributed those notices, and then, when the ministers took over, we worked with them until the very end” (page 10).

I stopped by this blog post to tell you that just like JoAnn Gibson Robinson you have within you the ability to set the record straight. You have within you the authority to overturn injustice. You have within you the wherewithal to tell the truth. You have within you the capacity to help bring a lost generation to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. You have within you the power to communicate! Now, right at your computer say to yourself, “I’ve got the power to communicate!”

Paul was in prison near the end of his life around AD 60-61, most likely in Rome when he wrote this letter. It is believed he wrote Colossians, Philemon, and Philippians at that time. How is it, then, that this letter written almost 2,000 years ago, offers insight to 21st century readers on how to become effective Christian communicators? How is it that in these seemly non-related subjects, spiritual warfare and communication that “iron sharpens iron?” I am glad you asked.

The book of Ephesians is timely tailored to teach us these truths: In order to receive the power to communicate, you must first recognize that you are in a spiritual battle. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Oftentimes we lose the Christian communication battle because we don't recognize we are in a spiritual battle in the first place. Have you ever wondered why your thoughts and opinions often get minimized while the thoughts and opinions of others are maximized? Have you ever wondered why there seems to be nothing but gloom and doom coming out of our city’s urban communities? Why does it always seem to be about what LeBron did, or what Obama did, or what Oprah did, and rarely bout what Jesus did? We are in a spiritual battle, but you can do something about that. You’ve got the power to communicate!

Not only must we recognize the battle, secondly, we must stand up for truth in the battle! Put on the belt of truth! Ephesians 6:14 tells us to, Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist. French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal once said, "Truth is so obscure in these times and falsehood so established, that unless we love the truth and search for it, we cannot know it." Stop letting media, the devil, and everybody else brainwash you and set your agenda for you. Search the Scriptures and know truth for yourself! And then speak truth in love.

The church has to be prophetic in the 21st century if we are going to communicate effectively as Christians. We have to speak truth on thes ill-gotten wars, on this eonomy, on predatory lending, on healthcare, and on issues that negatively impact African Americans, the poor and the elderly. The black church has to speak the truth!

Recognize that you are in a spiritual battle. Stand up for truth in the battle. Put on the belt of truth. Finally, to receive the power to communicate, you must as Spike Lee has said, “Do the right thing.” Ephesians 6:14 tells us, “ Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, and the breastplate of righteousness in place.”

“Having put on the breastplate of righteousness…,” what does it mean? It means first of all that your righteousness is not yours. It belongs to Jesus Christ. Don’t let what has happened in your past, keep you from your future! The best “you” you will ever be is just waiting on you to be revealed! Step out on faith. Take one step with God, and He will take two with you. Is God calling you to speak more, write more, or preach more? Then do it. Paul dared to declare, “I can do all things through Christ who strengths me.” Do the right thing.

We are at war! You are needed on the battlefield. Recognize that you are in a spiritual battle, stand up for truth in the battle and do the right thing. God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. God has given you the power to communicate!

Remember, it is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!

How To Hit A Home Run With God

Oftentimes, people strike out in the game of life simply because they don't know God. Where Is A Good Street Walker When You Need One?!

Where is a good street walker when you need one? I ask that question half tongue-in-cheek, but the black church has put emphasis in the past on getting prostitutes off the streets. This is good. With the same fervor used in pulling women off the streets, we should be putting street walkers, evangelists on the streets as witnesses for Jesus Christ!

I said earlier this summer that the cults are out there out-witnessing us witnesses. This is one reason Christians are denouncing Christianity, turning to other faiths, or adding unbiblical all-roads-lead-to-heaven types of beliefs with Christianity. On any given Sunday, or Monday, or Tuesday, any day of the week, for that matter, we are more apt to see Mormons in pairs riding their bikes, Jehovah's Witnesses walking the streets, and Muslims on the street corners selling their bean pies and Final Calls than we are to see denominational or non-denominational Christians witnessing for Christ.

Moreover, almost every weekend here lately, so it seems, a public service or charitable organization is having a walk or a run or an event to raise money for their cause -- colon cancer, breast cancer, some other form of cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, children with disabilities, AIDS and HIV, and the lists goes on. Where are the Christians amongst all this apparent do-gooding? Soon, the kettles will be out and the bells will be ringing. Will we be there?

I have seen the work going on inside the church, and not just my church. I don't want to minimize that which is good and needed inside many churches. Bless God for those churches and the gifts He has given to believers to edify the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:7-17), but where are the outside workers, street walkers, runners, joggers even, for Jesus in these tough economic times?

Considering the numbers of churches on every corner in every city, and the size of some of our mega churches, we should be bumping into each other on the streets with our complimentary Bibles and tracks eager to share the Good News with anyone willing to give us half a minute of their time.

What's up with the 21st century Andrew and woman at the well? Why aren't we sharing our faith in this century the way they both did in the first century? Could it be we are settling for the creature comforts of padded pews and familiarity, only to discuss Jesus with those whom we know and feel comfortable because they are members of the church? Or are we uncomfortable defending the faith and sharing our testimonies, so we don’t do it? Or are evangelistic ministries turning to technology and the internet, abandoning what they perceive to be outdated methods for reaching the lost of for Jesus Christ? Or are we simply too afraid that the world is just too cruel , too nasty, and too mean and anything could happen to us out there? The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Lord, please send us some street walkers this season!

How to Have A Blessed Sunday!

"Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near" Hebrews 10:25.

For many people, Sunday is their only day to sleep in, do yardwork, watch sports on television, do housework, or simply relax by the grill with family and friends. They guard their one special day with their lives, and even the "gates of hell" cannot prevent them from their self-appointed assignments. For them, church is not a mandate. It's an option, if at all, that often falls near the bottom on their list of things to do. They call it a blessed Sunday when the sun sets and they can sleep with their tasks complete.

And then there are the "bedside baptists," the people who feel they need God, but not the church and its "sanctified" traditions. They would rather spend Sundays perched in front of the television watching church on the cable stations, or by listening to it on the radio. They would rather "claim their blessing" by "sowing a seed" into a ministry in another state rather than to drop a dollar in the offering plate at their local church. Without a "Holy hug" nor handshake, nor a "Good Morning! Good to see you," they call it a blessed Sunday when the credits roll on their favorite televangelist or gospel show and they have "experienced God" alone, all by themselves.

These two groups of people are missing the real blessing Sundays bring. A blessed Sunday includes the worship of the True and Living God in fellowship with other believers. Hebrews 10:25 tells us worshipping and fellowshipping together is not an option, but a mandate. *Here are four reasons we should make it a habit of worshipping God together every Sunday in fellowship with other believers:

Fellowship provides encouragement and love. Being in the presence of other believers can encourge us to live for Christ, as well as give us a sense of belonging and acceptance that we don't receive from the world
Fellowship allows us to learn from spiritually mature Christians. In the biblical account of the early church, we are told how the apostle Paul's friends, Priscilla and Aquila, took time to help another believer lern more about Jesus (see Acts 18:26). Likewise, younger Christians and new believers will have the opportunity to gain spiritual wisdom and insight from more mature Christians.
Fellowship helps us discern false teachings. The Bible warns of false teachers and teachings, to which the young and immature believe is especially susceptible because they lack spiritual understanding. A healthy, Bible-teaching chuch will encourage new believers in their growth and help them discern truth from error.
Fellowship prepares us for Christ's return. As the day for Christ's return comes closer, we need to help each other through difficult times and keep our problems in perspective. We also need to encourage each other to live holy lives and to share God's Good News with others in the time that remains. God wants the body of Christ to stand out and be a light in these dark and evil days.

These are just four reasons to assemble together with other believers on Sundays. Also, God tells us in the Ten Commandments to honor the Sabbath Day and keep it holy (Deut. 5:12). God tells us to seek first His Kingdom and Righteousness (Matt. 6:33). Regardless of whether you or a Saturday or Sunday worshipper, the point is we are called to worship and fellowship together. There are no lone ranger Christians. Have a blessed Sunday this Sunday. If you have strayed away from Christian fellowship, step out on faith and begin again. Find a healthy, Bible-believing church and attend. Do it not for the preacher, nor for the choir, nor for your family and friends. Do it because it is the only way to truly have a blessed Sunday.

The Memorial, the first on the National Mall to honor a man of peace, hope, and color, will be dedicated on August 28 in a West Potomac Park ceremony on the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King's historic "I Have a Dream" speech.

Don't Worry, Mr. President. Be Happy?

President Obama turned 50 yesterday, and the article Obama at 50: Older, Wiser ... Happier? talks about people being "happier" at middle age. The article cites a study that says that at around ages 45-50, worry and anger plummets and a person's "happiness" levels rises significantly. With all that the president has gone through with the debt ceiling compromise, and is facing with the economy and with two wars, if anybody has a reason NOT to be happy at 50, it's President Obama. The joke about presidents is they grey faster due to the high levels of stress that comes with the job. I am seeing a lot of grey in President Obama's head these days.

The one thing that stood out to me in the article is the use of the word "happy." I prefer the word "joy." Joy is a fruit of the spirit (Gal. 5:22). It is God given. Happiness is man driven. Happiness is predicated on external factors, whether one has money, prestige, degrees, and all of the "to do's" completed on their check list. Joy is not. It is God given. Do you think it is true that people are "happier" at middle age?

What about young people in the Bible....Mary at age 13 or 14 finding out she is pregnant, not by Joseph but by God......Timothy pastoring the church at Ephesus at a young age....the prodigal son spending all his money of riotous living.....David being called to rule Israel at a young age? These young people were under a lot of stress, but were their lives man driven or God driven?

I just think equating happiness with age is a farce. If people are nourished on the Word of God and live by Godly principles, they can begin to have joy at any age. The rich, young ruler could have had joy, but he wouldn't give up his possessions and follow Jesus. This joy that I have the world didn't give it to me, and the world can't take it away!

Off the Agenda: Social Media Is Not Optional!

Here is an article that says what I have been saying for six years now, social media is not optional if the church intends to reach youth and young adults. We must be willing to meet them where they hang out, and that is on the internet. While they go to the internet for one reason, the church must go for another and that is to share the Gospel. After all, the church is called to go into all the world, teach, baptize, and teach (Matthew 28:19 &20). Well, now that world has to include cyberspace.

While social media evangelism is not optional, I believe though that "face time" with real human beings is not optional either. I have said so in the Saving S.O.U.L.S. group in the post entitled, "Where Is A Good Streetwalker When You Need One?" The church is not on her j-o-b. Non-believers are out there outreaching believers with activities, walks, and runs that don't have anything to do with God.

To be critical of social media, it is too isolating. It is easy to sit behind a computer screen and talk a good game. It is much harder to look someone on the eye ball and mean it. The lost and backslidden, or the "unchurched" and "dechurched" as we call them these days, come with baggage, varying personalities and real issues, addictions, mental and physical illnesses, and the like. Many of us don't have time to deal with that. Blogging, tweeting, and facebooking leaves too many more of us with sore backs and stiff joints from hours and hours of immobility and little exercise.

But with all of its drawbacks, social media is still not optional if the church really intends to reach today's youth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In far too many churches there is no crying, no giggling, no laughter, and no pitter patter of little feet. There is no nursery, nor children's and youth Sunday school for that matter. The church needs to get "linked in" or she's going to get left out.

St. Stephen New Members On God's Team, Win With Jesus!

When Jesus asked Matthew, the tax collector to follow Him, Matthew wanted everyone to know he had made his connection with God. He invited friends and guests and hosted a party at his home celebrating his new life in Christ (Matthew 5:27-29 and 2 Corinthian 5:17).

On July 23rd &; 24th, the St. Stephen Church Member Services Ministry hosted a Matthew Party, a "Connection Celebration Weekend" for new members, their families and guests. Connection Celebration recognized, during and after worship services, all new members who have connected with God and St. Stephen since June of 2010. The theme was "I'm a Member of God's Team!" New members enjoyed light refreshments, received "God's Team" fun favors, entered drawings to win gifts, and signed up for new members' and Bible Fellowship classes and ministries at receptions held at the Louisville and Southern Indiana campuses and Dosker Manor location after worship services.

Winning with Christ and sportin' a "I Love My Church" t-shirt, new member Maurice Thomas holds the gift he won at the celebration, bookends shaped like a football that read "Christ Is Life." Maurice is a member of the Building In Christ adult bible fellowship class. He got connected to the Men's Ministry and Mighty Men's Choir shortly after joining in 2010. Also, he is a member of the Prayer Ministry.

New members Jenelle Jackson and her son Demetrius Yarbrough are on the winning team in more ways than one, each winning gifts in random drawings. Demetrius shows off his children's gift basket.

"We want everyone to know what great things God is doing in the lives of our new members and in the life of our church," stated Member Services Director Min. Angela Lee Price. "St. Stephen is on "the grow!" We had close to 600 new members joined St. Stephen Church in 2010, and so far this year, approximately 300 new members have united with us.

New member Deonta Simpson (in black) with his mother Angela Simpson-Reed (in green) and family members. Deonta participated in worship by recognizing all new members during the Welcome on the Louisville campus.

"Connection Celebration helps our new members feel welcomed and provides another opportunity for ministry leaders and members to meet them. It provides an opportunity, too for them to get connected to Bible fellowships, small groups and ministries," Min. Price stated.

New members were encouraged to bring families and friends. Approximately 45 guests attended the Connection receptions over the weekend. Six guests connected with St. Stephen Church, four at the reception after the 9:40 a.m. worship service. Connection Celebration will be held again in November.

(Louisville, KY) The four-day Those Preachin' Women Conference in Louisville concluded on Saturday, July 16th with a Celebration of The First Lady Luncheon at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church. Co-Pastor and First Lady, Rev. Cassandra Gray, New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Shelbyville, Kentucky was the guest speaker. St. Stephen Church Associate Minister and Jesus Saves Ministries Founder, Min. Angela Lee Price was mistress of ceremonies.

Conference Convener, host pastor Rev. Kathy Goodwin stated that she too was a first lady when she started in ministry. She believed then that all first ladies were supposed to do was sit on the first row and wear nice hats, clothes, and shoes. She quickly realized that first ladies were often lonely in the since that there were things that happened in ministry that they couldn't discuss with members of the congregation. First ladies are often overlooked for the significant roles they play in serving God along side their husbands in ministry, she stated.

Greencastle Baptist Church, Quinn Chapel AME Church, House of Faith Christian Church, and Right Now Harvest Church were four of several churches represented with their first ladies in attendance. In all, eight first ladies shared insights on their experiences beside their husbands who pastor churches in Kentucky. Several first ladies were ministers who served in roles such as assistant pastor and co-pastor. Some first ladies expressed a calling to intercessory prayer for their families and congregation. At least one enjoyed ministering in song, while another stated she enjoyed teaching Sunday school. Another first lady expressed a call to making members, especially new members feel welcomed in the church. The ladies received gifts from KOG Ministry and Jesus Saves Ministries throughout the luncheon in random drawings.

Guest speaker Rev. Cassandra Gray spoke from Habakkuk 3:16-19 and Matthew 11:12-15 in the message entitled, I Am Not a Cracked Pot. "Ailment, and situations make us feel like we are under such pressure and we can't go on," she stated. Habakkuk goes from questioning God in chapter one to saying yet I will wait patiently on the Lord in chapter three. Gray stated, "We need to say when we can't see it, I will wait on the Lord." We lose heart in the process. The world would have you think you have lost your mind. "The waiting is not about God, it is about us," she stated.

The theme of the conference was Prayer and Praise Under Pressure. Preachin' women from various Louisville-area churches brought the prayer, praise and the preached Word nightly July 13th - 15th.

We will be celebrating during and after worship services with all new members who have connected with God and St. Stephen Church since July 2010.

This workshop presenter at the African American Fellowship Convention in Lubbock, Texas yesterday, Pastor Michael Evans, a Baptist Pastor suggested that Baptist need to do more to engage the culture, particularly young people. Some of the suggestions were if you are in a Spanish-speaking community, learn to speak spanish, use Facebook and Twitter to let friends know you are in church, if your church or community has alot of young people, have dances for them. He also said that the church-going audience is more educated now, many having completed high school and college. As a result, Sunday school teachers are going to have to "step up their game" by not reading lessons verbatim. Instead they need to know the text, and background and come prepared for dialogue so that deeper learning can occur.

I agree. The church needs to do much more to reach young people. In many churches, the absence of young people is scary. There is no doubt about that. The world is reaching our children everyday on television, in the movies, on the radio, and yes, on Facebook and other social media sites. Young people are being exposed to sex, immorality, crime and drugs at extremely young ages. Too many children act like grown adults and it is sad. They know how to make babies, but they know nothing about how to raise them because they are still babies themselves. So, yes, the church needs to reach young people.

But once the church reaches them, the church needs to teach them. The church is not a social club. It should not be a place that just has activities for activities sake. The church should be just as radical, if not more radical, in "training up a child" as it is in reaching a child. The church needs to offer Bible Bowls and debates in scripture in such a way where young people will get it, and will not be afraid to speak to the Jehovah's Witness at their door, nor too timid to give a sound defense for the faith. The church should be just as radical in training up children in their culture so that they not only know whose they are in Christ Jesus, but who they are as a people. The church needs to be just as radical in "training up a child" in reading, writing, math, techonology, and the sciences so that our children, African American children, are able to compete with the best and the brightest from any culture anywhere.

I'd like to give a shout out to my church, St. Stephen church, pastor and choirs for representin' last night at the opening Ecumenical Service for the Indiana Black Expo. The Temple and Sanctuary choirs accompanied Pastor Cosby along with a caravan of church members. The Temple Choir director, John Ray is from Light of the World Christian Church where the service was held. I know the occasion was special for him. Pastor Cosby is always talking about those delicious Krispy Kreme donuts in his messages. Makes me want to swing by the donut shop this morning, but I digress. Some of Pastor Cosby's best messages, in my opinion, are those that include black history. He is an excellent historian. The article below states, "He reminded those gathered of the accomplishments of blacks through history, including George Washington Carver, Dr. Charles Drew and Jackie Robinson."

I was on BlackChristianNews.com and ran across this news story saying that apparently many people, religious leaders and Christians still prefer reading the King James version of the Bible despite the numerous versions that have since been written in contemporary language, Rev. Joseph Lowery, T. D. Jakes and Black Churches Give Praise to the KJV Bible - BCNN1.

I am not a King James Only proponent by any means, however, I agree that some passages in the Bible don't translate, read like, or "memorize well" like King James. For example, whenever I recite John 1:1-18, I use King James. There is a beautiful poetic flow from "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God..." that I don't get with other versions of that particular passage.

I have many Bible translations. I believe I prefer the New International Version. It is one of, if not the most popular version today. There is a news story out about the NIV 2011 version. Apparently the Southern Baptist are raising a fuss over it's gender-neutral language.

This ministry has given away more than 700 Bibles through our Walking With Jesus campaigns the past few years, most of them ESV (English Standard Version), some the HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible). These are good contemporary translations. I will say that one of my least favorite Bible translations, however, is The Message Translation because it doesn't keep to the original meaning of the text in too many instances. It should definitely not be used as a study Bible.

In John 21:15-17, Jesus asked Simon Peter three times, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter was frustrated by the third time and said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.”

Loving Jesus Christ requires that we obey His Word, and feed His sheep by telling others about Him. This is what we strive to do at Jesus Saves Ministries, share the saving grace of Jesus Christ from an African American perspective.

I don't know where exactly in California the above picture was taken, Los Angeles, Hollywood, or another location, but Jesus saves gangsters in Louisville, too! He delivers, heals, and gives them a voice in the political process. Jesus Saves Ministries is helping restore voting rights to former felons through an advocacy program that enabled 11 former felons to vote in the 2008 historic presidential election, many where able to cast votes for the first time in their lives through this initiative.

Additionally, Jesus Saves Ministries is helping former felons get their criminal records expunged. By the power of Jesus Christ, more past offenders are turning their lives around and serving faithfully in their churches as ushers, deacons, staff and ministry leaders. Black Males: Don't Talk About Them, Pray About Them!

Your prayers are needed now more than at any time this year. Please stand with me in agreement to remain committed to lifting up each other as we travail together in faith before the Lord for the lost, hurting, and displaced people in our families, churches, and communities.

While we remain encouraged by the Word of God no matter the situation, there are too many people who aren't getting the sustenance they need to make it through these difficult times. We must travail for them.

Just last week, I posted a blog that said unemployment among young black malesnationally is the highest its been in 40 years. The economy may be doing better in some respects, but young black males are suffering the hardest. Agree with me to talk to God about this issue. I see 20-something males every day who are trying to turn their lives around. Let's not talk about them, but pray about them. They need the grace, mercy, and love, second and thirds chances, too, that Jesus Christ offers to each of us. The need mentors and guardian angels to show them the way. Prayer changes things.

In hearing and reading current news stories, we understand that members of this network are not immune from economic hard times, and hardships either. The bible tells in John 16:33, "...In this world you will have trouble." . In fact, Christians will suffer just as Jesus suffered for the gospel's sake. So we must travail in prayer not only for other people, but for one another.

Each day this month, place the name of one person on our prayer list who we can all pray for. Once a week this month, post a prayer in our prayer group, The Prayers of the Righteous. Let us together, through our participation in faith, encourage each other as we stand in the gap for the needs of "least of these" -- the lost, the unemployed, underemployed, the homeless, those in crisis circumstances -- the sick, shut-in, hospitalized, as well as our own families, pastors, churches, ministries and communities.

Remember, the prayers of the righteous availeth much!

How to Have A Blessed Sunday

"Let us not negliect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near" Hebrews 10:25.

For many people, Sunday is their only day to sleep in, do yardwork, watch sports on television, do housework, or simply relax by the grill with family and friends. They guard their one special day with their lives, and even the "gates of hell" can not prevent them from their self-appointed assignments. For them, church is not a mandate. It's an option, if at all, that often falls near the bottom on their list of things to do. They call it a blessed Sunday when the sun sets and they can sleep with their tasks complete.

And then there are the "bedside baptists," the people who feel they need God, but not the church and its "sanctified" traditions. They would rather spend Sundays perched in front of the television watching church on the cable stations, or by listening to it on the radio. They would rather "claim their blessing" by "sowing a seed" into a ministry in another state than to drop a dollar in the offering plate at their local church. Without a "Holy hug" nor handshake, nor a "Good Morning! Good to see you," they call it a blessed Sunday when the credits roll on their favorite televangelist or gospel show and they have "experienced God" alone, all by themselves.

These two groups of people are missing the real blessing that Sundays bring. A blessed Sunday is one that involves fellowship with other believers. Hebrews 10:25 tells us worshipping and fellowshipping together is not an option, but a mandate. *Here are four reasons Christians should make it a habit of fellowshipping together every Sunday:

Fellowship provides encouragement and love. Being in the presence of other believers can encourge us to live for Christ, as well as give us a sense of belonging and acceptance that we don't receive from the world.
Fellowship allows us to learn from spiritually mature Christians. In the biblical account of the early church, we are told how the apostle Paul's friends, Priscilla and Aquila, took time to help another believer lern more about Jesus (see Acts 18:26). Likewise, younger Christians in the church today willhave the opportunity to gain spiritual wisdom and insight from more mature Christians.
Fellowship helps us discern false teachings. The Bible warns of false teachers and teachings, to which the young and immature believe is especially susceptible because they lack spiritual understanding. A healthy, Bible-teaching chuch will encourage new believers in their growth and help them discern truth from error.
Fellowship prepares us for Christ's return. As the day for Christ's return comes closer, we need to help each other through difficult times and keep our problems in perspective. We also need to encourage each other to live holy lives and to share God's Good News with others in the time that remains. God wants the body of Christ to stand out and be a light in these dark and evil days.

These are just four reasons to assemble together with other believers on Sundays. Also, God tells us in the Ten Commandments to honor the Sabbath Day and keep it holy. God tells us to seek first His Kingdom. Regardless of whether you or a Saturday or Sunday worshipper, the point is we are called to worship and fellowship together. There are no lone ranger Christians. Have a blessed Sunday this Sunday. If you have strayed away from Christian fellowship, step out on faith and begin again. Find a healthy, Bible-believing church and attend. Do it not for the preacher, the choir, nor for your family and friends. Do it because it is how to have a blessed Sunday.

Unemployment Rate for Black Males Highest In 40 Years

The result for black men ages 16 to 19 is a fate that now resembles a coin toss. Of those seeking work, 54.6 percent find jobs. More than 45 percent do not.

Forty-five percent. It is a number five times the general unemployment rate and almost double the rate for teens. Economists believe that recessions are always harshest on the most vulnerable workers, who are the first to lose their jobs and the last to be rehired, and young black men have long been considered most vulnerable of all. The contributing reasons — which experts say range from education to transportation to systemic racism — are now the topic of abstract debates in the White House and on Capitol Hill. Read more

June is here! Don't let what has happened the past few months keep you from the future God has for you. Why not make the rest of your year the best of your year. Today, choose to begin again with Jesus Christ. Jesus says in His Word, "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me." I love that promise! Jesus promises to do the drawing when we must do the lifting. We invite you to join us in sharing the good news that Jesus saves!

We would love to hear what great and marvelous things God is doing in your life today. As the birds sing, and the "Son" shines, take time to share that powerful testimony God has given you, that scripture He has placed on your heart, that sermon excerpt that in faith will become a rhema word for a weary soul, that upcoming summer revival, conference or ministry event, that prayer request or praise report, and that birthday greeting or note of encouragement, and become an instrument of God's drawing and saving power in someone's life. It doesn't matter where you live. You can reach someone with the Gospel in your hometown, or across the nation, and around the world when you choose to step out in faith and begin again for Jesus Christ. With faith, even the size of a mustard seed, God can move mountains! Trust God and begin again today.

We are blessed by your presence here, but we know in faith that the best is yet to come when you choose to begin again on the Jesus Saves Social Network. Wooten-Francis says that she worshiped in her class when the students were not in the room and read her bible during her lunch break. MLK National Memorial Dedication and Online Ticket Lottery

Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation announced in this week's Louisville Defender Newspaper plans for the August 28^th dedication of the MLK National Memorial, in West Potomac Park, in Washington, D.C. The official dedication is set for Sunday, August 28, the 48^th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and Dr. King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech. The new Memorial, visually positioned between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, will feature more than a dozen King quotes in granite and four recurring themes of his legacy -- democracy, justice, hope, and love. I am not sure if this quote is there, but it is one of my favorites, "The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It must be the guide and the critic of the state, and never its tool."

And as the tribute does for the men and women of the Bible who walked with God that is the Faith Hall of Fame in Hebrews, Chapter 11, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial will stand as a testament of the life of a mighty man of faith who trusted God, dreamed big, and changed the course of history. It, too, will serve as a reminder that King’s dream of freedom, equality and justice for all, the substance of things hoped for, was not fully realized in his lifetime.

In Loving Memory Memorial Day Tributes

Guardians Tag Ministry

As we observe the Memorial Day holiday this weekend, let us take time on the Jesus Saves Social Network to remember in faith our dearly departed loved ones who have gone on to glory. We have this blessed assurance from Scripture that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die (John 11:25-26). Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am" (John 14:1-4).

Though we may miss our friends and loved ones on earth, we can rejoice knowing that anyone who dies in Christ is with Jesus right now in heaven. What a glorious benefit of salvation that is!

Remember your departed friends, family members and loved ones by reflecting on their Godly influence in your life. Post their names, relation to you, and any note of remembrance the Lord places on your heart to this post either below or in the Prayers of the Righteous Group on the Jesus Saves Social Network.

(Christians Actively Reaching Everyone) Division.

A Mother's Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Lord, we love You and adore You. Forgive our sins and those of our children. I come to you on behalf of mamas, grandmamas, "Big Mamas," "Get Mamas," "Nanas" and God Mothers everywhere, women of God submitted to Your way, Your will, and Your Word. Father, give them knowledge, wisdom and understanding to face life’s parenting challenges with dignity and discernment. Lord, when the load seems too heavy, help them remember that You are the burden bearer, that with You all things are possible.

Abba, when mamas, grandmamas, and Big Mamas cry out in the midnight hour on behalf of their children, help them recall the work of our ancestors, and the strength of womanhood from previous generations, and the godly women You've given as examples in Your Word.

Help them remember that African American women endured unjust and inhumane treatment, extreme hardships in this nation's history to protect and rear their children. Help them remember the unfeigned faith of Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, women who instilled a steadfast faith in the young preacher Timothy. It was a faith that caused Paul to declare to in 2 Timothy 1:5,"I am persuaded that it is in thee also.”

When confronted with rebellious children and rebellious parents who neglect parenting responsibilities, help your mamas, grandmamas, and Big Mamas recall the prayer of our sister Dr. Renita Weems in the book, Showing Mary (page 177):

“When I am tempted to doubt myself
and question my gifts and experience,
Remind me, God, of all that I know,
And that which I don’t know that I
know.

Remind me who I am and whose I am.
Even when I hide behind
piety to
avoid doing what must be done,
and use you as an excuse for
indecision,
for lack of action, for silencing myself.

Love me enough
to lift the lid off my basket,
and order me to stop crouching in the dark,
Like a woman without a God.”

Miss Kentucky Plus America Pageant Happens This Weekend

You are a daughter/son of The King! Yours is a testimony of suffering and victory. Scripture tells us that we are going to suffer just as Christ has suffered (Romans 8:17). The good news is trouble don't last always. If God be for us, who (or what) can be against us. I'd rather have Jesus with me in the sick room, than to be without Him in the board room.

Queen Esther was called to her crown "for such a time as this." God is already moving in your life, and using you to accomplish His will in ministry.

All eyes appear to be on Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal wedding, but as Christians we have been wedded to Jesus Christ. We are bride to The Bridegroom. We need to remind OURSELVES that we are seated for Jesus in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). That is the point of this give-away. No matter your size, God loves you. Hold your head up! Trust in Him.

God has reminded me that in the same year I receive a man-made crown, He gave me an eternal crown. The eternal trumps the temporal any day. And oh, yes, the storms have raged in my life. People may see my glory, but they don't know my story. But through it all, God has kept me and it does not yet appear what I shall be. Just as I have suffered with Him, I shall be glorified with Him (Romans 8:17). Not only I, but you, and all Christians also.

Rahab: From the House of Shame to the Hall of Fame!

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “Especially Jerico.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute name Rahab and stayed there….Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you…Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family because I have shown kindness to you.” …

Then the Israelites burned the whole city and everything in it….But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jerico – and she lives among the Israelites to this day. Joshua 2:1, 8-9, 12; 6:24-25.

All Christians have a measure of faith and I am glad about it. Ephesians 2:9 says we are saved by grace through faith and this not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not by works, so that no man can boast.

Some of us, however, have a greater measure of faith. Abraham, for example, obeyed God when the Lord told him to leave his country, and the Lord made him the father of many nations (Gen. 12:1-4). The woman with the issue of blood had great faith (Mark 5:25-34). She went to extraordinary lengths to touch the hem of Jesus' garment because she believed He could do what no other doctor could do. Jesus rewarded her for her tenacity. He told her it was her faith that healed her.

I have made an interesting observation about faith while teaching spiritual gifts. Faith is both a spiritual gift (1 Corin. 12:9) and a spiritual fruit (Gal 5:22). Do you know the difference between a spiritual gift and a spiritual fruit? The first has to do with process and the other has to do with results of process.

Faith, interestingly enough, too, is one of the pieces of the armor of God (Ephesian 6:16). Scriptures says it is with faith that we quench all the flaming arrows, or fiery darts, of the enemy. I see faith in action on the cereal commercial where the guy is eating his crunchy cereal at his desk and a guy, his boss no doubt, walks up to him and tells him he's fired. The cereal is so good to the worker that he joyfully continues to munch and crunch, and he doesn't hear a word that his boss is saying. Finally, when the man stops eating and asks, "What did you say?," the boss says "Never mind!" In my Holy Ghost imagination, that man prayed before he went to work and asked God to protect his job, and career, and He did!

In this faith discussion, it is Rahab who intrigues me. She went from the House of Shame to the Hall of Fame! No respectable woman wanted to be in her presence. She was not on the "A" List at the Derby party, but the Black List at every party. Rahab was a prostitute, but more than that. She ran a whore house. She was a business woman. And in working her deal to save the Israelites and herself, she made sure to save her whole family. I call it the "I got you" clause in the contract. I can respect that.

Rahab lied in hiding the Israelite spies in Joshua chapter two. It would appear that it is okay to lie since God blessed Rahab, and even the Midianite midwives who lied to Pharoah. However, the midwives were blessed with families not because they lied, but because they feared God (Exodus 1:17 and v21). And Rahab and her family were spared not because she lied, but because of God’s grace toward her and her faith in Him (Hebrews 11:31) and (James 2:25).

Rahab put her faith in God, and she went from the house of shame to the faith Hall of Fame (Hebrews 11:31). How is your faith? Are you trusting in God because He is God all by Himself? Or are you putting your faith in people, your career or your finances? People are fickled. They won't let you forget your sins oftentimes. Careers and finances come and go. But, the Bible says, "If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive your sins and cleanse you of all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). The Bible says, "Now, if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may share in his glory” Romans 8:17. Like Rahab, you, too, can go from the house of shame to the Hall of Fame. Put your faith not in your house, car, career, degrees, people or your bank account. Put your faith in God!

Now, Run And Tell That!

Scripture: John 20:1, 10-17
"Jesus said, 'Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God’” (v 17 NIV).

Six women in the New Testament had the name Mary. One of them was from a northern city called Magdala in Galilee. Mary Magdalene became a follower of Jesus early in his ministry after he healed her of seven demons (Luke 8.2). I don’t know if her head spun around like Linda Blair in the movie, The Exorcist, or if she cut herself violently like the Gadarene demoniac, but one thing is for sure she was eternally grateful when Jesus freed her from her affliction so much so, that she left everything to follow Him. She became a friend, supporter, traveling companion, and disciple. When all the disciples abandoned Jesus during his crucifixion, Mary Magdalene stayed there, along with the other women. On the morning of the resurrection, Mary and some other women including Mary the mother of James and Joseph went to anoint to body of Jesus, but found the tomb empty (Matt. 28:1-5; John 20:1). She ran and got James and John, and after they had left, she met the risen Jesus.

Some Gnostic writings would have you to believe that Jesus married Mary Magdalene. Dan Brown in the DaVinci Code goes so far as to claim that they even had a baby together. However, there is no evidence to prove this in Scripture. Evidence indicates that Jesus and Mary had a unique relationship, one of Teacher and disciple. It was unique in that women were not permitted to study the Law. Jesus broke all the rules where women were concerned. He risked being considered unclean for associating with them. And for a Rabbi to associate in any way with a woman once possessed with evil spirits was unheard of in his culture.

Jesus called Mary to a pivotal assignment at the tomb on Resurrection Morning. He could have told her to go and play with the children since that’s “woman’s work,” or go and pray since women “know how to get a prayer through,” or go and stay quiet since women “should keep quiet in the church,” but he didn’t. In the words of rappers Timberland and Drake, he said, "I'm going to need you to say something (say, say something), baby!" He told her, “Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” In other words, Now run and tell that!

Somebody needs to know that Jesus is risen! Regardless of the situation, there is hope in Jesus Christ. He’s a heart fixer, a mind regulator, a burden bearer, and heavy load sharer! Somebody needs to put on some jogging shoes today, and say something!....Now, run and tell that!

What is it that we must do to help bring more people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? We must...

Start early
1. “Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.” If you want to make a discovery about who Jesus is yourself, get a jumpstart while it is still dark. Start early.

Stay fit
2. If you are going to be a witness for Jesus Christ, you must stay fit. To run for Jesus requires that you have strength, stamina, courage and conviction. Mary Magdalene didn’t just begin running for Jesus in verse 17, she began running for him soon after He cured her of seven demons (Luke 8:3). The race is not to the swift, but to those who endure to the end. Stay fit.

Stay late
3. The bible says, "Then the disciples went back to their homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying…. " (v11). She stayed late. In this severe economic crisis, many people are turning to God. However, many are not participating and partnering with God. Like the disciples, in running to look in the tomb and leaving, many people come to church, look in and leave early. Some come to see what they can see and others come to get what they can get. Mary Magdalene stayed late. She went beyond the call of duty and tried to tend to the things of God. If you want to hear from God in a direct and profound way, do what Mary did and stay late.

To run and tell that, not only must you start early, stay fit, stay late, but you must…

Stick with it.
4. The angels asked, "Woman, why are you crying?" She told them, "They have taken my Lord away and I don’t know where they have put him." She was so concerned about finding Jesus that she threw protocol and formality out the window. She didn’t say, "My name is Mary, and you are? What you doing just sitting in the tomb in all that white?” None of that. She was so busy sticking with her task of searching for Jesus, that the presence of the angels was the least of her concerns. The bible tells us, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Tim 2:15. Stick with it. And finally, you must...

5. Stride Wide
You have got to get off your "but!" You've got to say something about who Jesus is and what He has done for you. He's got up out of that tomb for you! ...." Jesus told Mary, "Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God'" (v17). In Matthew 28:18-19, Jesus told the disciples, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Ghost;..." The operative word here is "Go." Go to your brothers and sisters who have lost sight of Jesus. Go to those who need to know who Jesus is. Don't just stand there! Say something, baby! Tell them Jesus saves! Now, run and tell that!

T.G.I.F. And It's Good Friday!

Guardians Tag MinistryA bad thing happened to Jesus on Good Friday, so what makes Good Friday so good? Jesus was falsely accused, scorned, rejected, whipped, humiliated, and nailed to the Cross on Good Friday. He suffered an agonizing death that day at the hands of the Jewish and Roman authorities. What happened on Good Friday definitely was not good, but the results were very good for you and me. Scripture tells us that because Jesus endured the suffering of the Cross, Christians can shout, T.G.I.F.!, thank God I'm forgiven and it's Good Friday!
Good Friday is good because Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. Romans 5:8 says, "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Isaiah 53:5 says, "He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisment of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." What can wash away are sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Good Friday is good for another reason. Jesus defeated Satan and his evil forces at the Cross. Colossians 2:15 states, "And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them at the cross." Hebrews 2:14-15 says, "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil-and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death."

Finally, Good Friday is good because it proves to us that when you put your faith in Jesus, it ain’t over, as Maurette Brown Clark sings, until God says it’s over! A lot of conversation occurred up on the Cross that day. Jesus prayed to God. One thief taunted Jesus. The second thief rebuked the first thief. The second thief asked Jesus to remember him in His kingdom. Finally, Jesus promised the second thief that he would spend eternity with Him. In lst Peter 3:8 we read, "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body, but made alive in the Spirit." Acts 4:12 says, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Good Friday is good because our sin debt was paid, Satan was defeated, and it proves that through faith in Jesus Christ there's hope for eternal life even in our darkest hour. For these reasons, you can say, T.G.I.F.!, thank God I'm forgiven and it's Good Friday!

It is not Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!
