Jesus Saves Ministries is taking donations for personal toiletries, socks, caps, t-shirts, Bibles for our missions initiative, "Blessings In A Basket" in its fourth year. Is the Prayer of Jabez A Selfish or Selfless?

(v9) "Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, 'Because I bore him in pain.' (v10) And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!' So God granted him what he requested."

The Prayer of Jabez at first glance appears to be a selfish prayer. Jabez, whose name means "Son of Sorrow," is mentioned only once in the Bible among a long list of names. Jabez asks God in 1 Chronicles 4:10 to enlarge his territory and bless him indeed. Despite using the words, "me," "my," and "I," a total of five times (NKJV) in one paragraph, God answers his prayer.

Why did God answer the prayer of Jabez? I believe God answered his prayer not because Jabez was selfish but because he was selfless. Jabez didn't want to live up to the expectation of his label. He didn't want to live according to the label of his name. That intrigued me because so many African American children are mislabeled, misdiagnosed, and misunderstood. They don't achieve because no one expects them to achieve. When we read the label on a bottle of Aleve, it says "pain reliever." Aleve is one of the most popular pain relievers on the market today. That's because what's on the outside matches its contents. Aleve works. Aleve alleviates pain.

However, no one wants to have anything to do with the contents of a package whose label reads "pain causer." We see a man walking down the street in a "wife beater" undershirt, and invariably he is labeled not by what's on the inside of him but by what's on the outside. Someone will lock their door or move to the other side of the street because it is assumed that he causes pain. Although Jabez caused his mother pain coming into the world, the label of his name was contrary to the content of his character. We know this to be true because at the outset the text states "Jabez was more honorable than his brothers" (v9). Though he was more honorable than his brothers, it was Jabez, and not his brothers, who carried the stigma, the negative name "Son of Sorrow." Jabez prayed to God that he may not cause sorrow, "that he may not cause pain." So, what looks like a selfish prayer really isn't selfish at all. Jabez prays for other people that he would not cause them pain. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we would pray this kind of prayer everyday?

Oh, Lord, we pray right now in the name of Jesus for the mislabeled, misdiagnosed, and misunderstood. Oh, Lord, don't let society's, and our own families' negative labeling cause pain! We ask forgiveness for anything we may have said or done that has caused another person to not see themselves the way you see them.  No matter their skin color, socioeconomic status; no matter their gender or their age, please give honor to whom honor is due! Enlarge their territory we pray.  Let the "slow learner" graduate from Harvard, and "athlete" win the Nobel Peace Prize. Oh, Lord, let the "ADHD" skip a grade, and the "physically challenged" win the Olympics. Oh, Lord, let the "angry black woman" become university president and even president of the United States. Oh, Lord, enlarge the territories of their honor and bless them indeed! Help us all live by the precepts in Your Word. Help us to be judged not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character. In Jesus Name, Amen.

St. Stephen Church Recognizes Ex-Offenders Moving Forward at Justice Weekend

September 7th & 8th was Justice Weekend at St. Stephen Church in Louisville, KY. Pastor Kevin Cosby recognized at each worship service a number of the ex-offenders who were present who have come through our advocacy partnerhip with the church.

Larry George (here with me) is one of five ex-offenders who regained his voting rights in June through our partnership with St. Stephen Church. Larry attended our voting rights/expungement workshop at St. Stephen in January. Since then, misdemeanors and felonies were expunged from his record, and his voting rights restored. Larry stepped out on faith, believed God, and used personal tenacity to regain his life back. Larry is now employed at Ford Motor Company. Praise the Lord! Larry George is asking for our prayers for staying power on the job as the transition has been challenging. Larry attends Sunday school and serves faithfully at St. Stephen Church in the Greeter's Ministry. We share his story so that you can see the power of God at work in men and women like Larry.

 

In all, we have assisted 32 former felons with restoration of voting rights, and some with criminal records expungements. They are not sitting on the premises but standing on the promises of God. Many of their testimonies can be found under the Blogs section of the Jesus Saves Social Network and on the Jesus Saves Ministries Blog.

These are two of the baskets we donated to "Bar-Be-Que Under the Bridge to Feed the Homeless" on Labor Day. We could not have done this without your recent donations. This is the fourth year for Blessings In A Basket. We started out the first two years creating baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year, we expanded to creating baskets at Easter and at select events year-round. The majority of our Christ-centered baskets are for the homeless, and less fortunuate, those in half-way houses, and struggling with addiction. Some of our baskets, support nursing homes, single mothers, men's and women's ministries, and special birthdays. One of the ways you can help fill our Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets is by donating any of these items:

Labor Day Bar-Be-Que Under The Bridge Feeds Homeless

Approximately 300 citizens of Louisville's homeless community received free breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the second annual Labor Day event, Bar-Be-Que Under the Bridge to Feed the Homeless held at Brook and Gray streets under the Interstate 65 bridge across from Norton Hospital in downtown Louisville. Attendees enjoyed plenty of food, fun, and fellowship that included hamburgers, hot dogs, donuts, popcorn, cotton candy, and snow cones, inflatable bounceys, a live gospel music, and plenty of give-aways at this day-long festival sponsored by Renea Motley Ministries.
"Bar B Q Under the Bridge for the Homeless, is a labor of love that provides a day of Labor Day holiday festivities for an often forgotten community. The goal is to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost in the hopes that many will be saved and to encourage the saved to keep the faith," stated Min. Motley (Photo left below with Min. Angela).

 

The festival got underway at 11:00 a.m. with Jesus Saves Ministries founder Min. Angela Lee Price rendering the opening prayer. Jesus Saves Ministries partnered in this event supplying ten "Blessings In a Basket" gift baskets that included toiletries, Christian t-shirts, Bibles, Daily Bread devotionals, and information sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. "We were glad to be of service to help make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. Matthew 25 tells us to serve the "Least of These" and that's why we are here today," Min. Price stated.

 

Praise Power 1350 WLOU, WLLV and the new Praize 104.7 FM General Manager Bill Price broadcasted live on location and volunteered his services handing out water and drinks.
